a lady of leisure meaning i dont really have to work
I work for FH, but i do not have to punch in like everyone else in the office and if i feel like staying home or doing something else i dont have anyone to answer to.
the only day i have to be here is on fridays, cause i have to go to the banks, do deposits and post offices, mail out the bills for him. and everyone in the office orders lunch and FH treats everyone and we eat together.
I know what you meant i just never heard it put that way, ive heard other terms used lol
well not everyone has to work, i know alot of women who have alot of money and decide to work and im talking about mult-millionaires, its more of a self-fulfillment thing and following their own dreams, kind of a self value thing...So more like you dont want to not that you dont have to bc alot of people still do even if they dont have to...When i decide to have kids FH makes enough for me to stay home but i will choose not to. Plus after a while you get bored out of your mind, and days feel so unproductive.
I never get bored of staying home or going out during the day. I could stay in bed all day everyday talk on the phone and cuddle with my dog. I just dont have that Gene in me to be ambitious and work really hard.

I went to school initally because I wanted to be a doctor. Made it to my senior year and decided I didn't want to go to med school (sorrry mom and dad!)
Now I am a commercial realtor and love my job. Who would have thought?

im just trying to point out the difference between not having to and not wanting to...If thats what you choose to do then more power to you, but the way you phrase things sometimes can come off the wrong way.

Yea I'm with you. Even if I could stay home I don't think I would want to. I'm a career woman. Of course it will be nice to stay with my kid when they are very young but I would go crazy after a while!
its sounds great to be able to not have to worry about working or the challening workforce envirnoment for a woman but its very important to me to set a strong, independent example for my children. i always thought that i should be able to support myself if heaven forbid i was a single parent, and i dont mean alimony. a woman dosent even have to work outside home to show that determination and motivation, a stay at home mom has plenty of challenges, at least until the kids are in school full-time.
i know this is sooooo evil and i deserve nasty responses but i always was embarrassed that my mom never worked, i dont mean when i was little, i mean through high school, college and even now. and we had noooo money and she really had no reason not to at least work part time at a library or something. i love my mom to death, but for some reason it always hurt my confidence as a woman that the mother i came from didnt have that motivation to do anything. ok, im ready for the harsh well-deserved criticism

Yea for me its also really important to be independent and be able to stand on my own two feet. My mom was completely the opposite and I saw how she struggled and was unhappy but couldn't do anything about it and I would never want to be in that situation.

Re: Are you what you thought you were going to be?
i am happy that i have my own career,, not just a job and i am established in that - FH and I are getting married later in life
my mom always stressed how important it is for my sister and me to have our own careers and not to depend on anyone
i mean, when i was young, so many of my friends' parents got divorced and many of the wives had never worked and didnt have training in anything either so my mom pointed out how important it is to hae your own career (she was a teacher for 34 years)

I'm not going to criticize you - I totally respect your opinion. I do feel a little sad that you were 'embarrased' by your mom staying at home, though. Embrace it! She was there for you when you were growing up - many kids don't have that!
For me, it was the opposite though. I was so thankful my mother stayed at home. While I don't plan on being a SAHM, I applaud those who do. Especially now that I'm going into education, I've seen so many kids who do not have anyone who is home (or parents who work extensive hours)and could use some parental guidance and nurturing. I was proud of my mother for being a SAHM. When my friends would talk about how they didn't spend a lot of quality time with their parents, I was so thankful that I had that with my mother.
But again, I totally see where you're coming from. Some families cannot have a parent at home, full time. If you need to make ends meet, you need to make ends meet - no matter what.

awwww no you are not evil seriously, and shouldnt feel bad. I understand where you are coming from...My mom went back to work when i was about 3-4 years old and still works...ANd you know what when my mom decided to leave my dad a few years ago she was able to do so and not worry...I always admired her and her independence. You do give inspiration to your daughters and motivate them, i mean most of us look to our parents as examples. But look at you, you are doing great and will be a great role model for your daughters dont worry. I think this depends alot on the individual cases, i do know women who stay at home, and they do work hard and do alot for their families and can still be great role models.

I totally understand you 100%. I question why my parents didnt do better than what they did. When I was younger and when I asked my parents for something and they couldnt afford it, I used to say ' Well you should of had more motivation in life to realize your kids needs'...you know how you think when your younger...., They kind of made me stronger than them in a way for not being all that I thought they SHOULD be.
About the work thing.. I would definaltey stay home with my children...I plan on having many....so it would be close to impossible to work. We are very traditional.

Re: Are you what you thought you were going to be?
dont get me wrong, i definitely think mothers who dont work can be excellent role models as well. my grandmother didnt work when her children lived at home, but she was ALWAYS busy with being involved with girl scouts, boy scouts, baseball games, sewing, cleaning, fixing the house, mowing the lawn ect....she was not the type to sit around wasting time, even now she is very active.
she always emphasized how important it was for a women nowadays to be able to support themselves because the world today isnt what she experienced. i always admired that.

lol yeah arent moms amazing?? my mom worked but we always had dinner together as a family and my house was always perfectly clean . . . its crazy! I didnt appreciate it until i got older.
Especially since my mom basically worked in a 'sweat shop' as a seamstress - she was on her feet for ten hours a day in terrible conditions - she came home, cooked dinner and did all the household stuff too!
she really is my inspiration when it comes to working after i have kids - i know FILs think that I should stop working at that point . . . but I dont want to have to struggle or make my kids struggle and I know that it can be done bc my mom did it! And for a lot less money!
We never really had money - we werent poor but I could never do any after school stuff or have a lot of the stuff other kids had bc of money and I want my kids to be able to join events and not worry about their education etc.

Not to be argumentative, but what you said about you staying at home with your kids seems kind of contradictory to what you said about your family (that they needed to be motivated to provide for their kids' needs)....?
If you're planning on having a large family and staying at home with them, aren't you concerned that your children will say the same thing about you? That you aren't motivated enough to provide for all of their needs?
I'm totally not saying that its true (that you aren't motivated)!!! I'm sure that you and your FH will plan so that your kids' needs will be met, I'm just saying that it seems like its contradictory....

Re: Are you what you thought you were going to be?
you know, last week someone asked the? about staying home and i responded with' this topic is too personal' and i think what this thread has become is exactly why i said just that
these are very personal issues and should not be discussed with 'strangers' Andrea asked the initial question in terms of life and career - not about whether or not women should stay home with their kids
someone said that they will because they are 'traditional' - in 2007, what is traditional??
to each their own, it is a personal topic and really only the couples business

Re: Are you what you thought you were going to be?
I was never upset that my mom didnt work because i couldnt have 'things'. i am very unmaterialistic, so much so that FH and i tend to disagree on many wedding items, lol, but i was upset because she didnt have the drive, or motvation . it was more of a personality thing.
now, a stay at home mom can have this same determination/motivation, it just depends on how it is used.
