Are you where you thought you would be?

Original post by heidla

I have been thinking a lot about where I pictured myself to be by now when I was younger. I am on track for most of it, but my career is in the toliet. I just can't seem to get myself to where I want to be in that area. I am even debating about moving away from my DH to try the theatre scene in London for a few months(I have been thinking about it forever). I just need to do something.

I was just wondering if everyone else is happy with where they are currently.

My career is in the toilet too, as a matter of fact its basically just sewer garbage.

Not at all...I always imagined being a nurse when I was younger. I even went to two years of school for nursing and then I got scared, because someone could've died if I made a mistake.

I thought by 26 I would have a career and here I am trying to get through school (just finished my BA and trying to convince myself to go to get my masters)

10 years ago I envisioned myself in a totally different career than where I am right now.
I also thought I would've been married with kids by 30 (got married at 33 and no kids...yet!)

But even though some things didn't happen as soon as I wanted them to, things are still great. My current job isn't what I'd consider a 'career', but it does pay the bills. And I'm making more money than I ever thought I would be

Hang in there Heidi! I've been where you're at.......but remember this - things can only get better!

I feel like I am not progressing as fast as I should. I should be done w/ my education by now and all, but I feel that the things that have gotten in my way have made me stronger because I had to overcome them. So even though I am not as far as i want to be, I am happy w/ the growth I had as a person...and that growth has made my attempts at achieving things more successful. If you asked me 10 years ago what I would be doing, I don't think I would have answered the same...but it's for the best.

Keep your head up though. It's a tough world in the entertainment industry. If it's in your blood, it will happen!

For the most part yes. I don't know if I had an exact plan but I am very happy with how my life has turned out.

No. I never thought I'd get married, especially at 26. I thought that I'd either teach or be on stage - instead I'm trying to get an agent for my first book. I went from being an attention hog to being very secretive about my life and that completely changed my career path.

But I love where I am; the orginal plan doesn't fit who I am now.

Nope, not even close, but I am really happy with what I have.

It is pretty amazing though, to compare what I thought would would happen to what IS happening. Especially now, since my brother left for AZ (mom is leaving Sept 4th), and my sister going to college in September. I never saw our lives going the way they have, but it really seems like the right thing for all of us. I am very grateful for that!

No, but I think that's OK. I may have had some unrealistic expectations for my life.

We have some goals we are working on together.

As far as work for myself, I am doing what I always wanted to do but the company is any employees nightmare( airline) but enjoy the job and the work I do.

Dh has the career he worked so hard to get and does well, but if he takes the steps to go out on his own he will be more fulfilled.

All in all things aren't so bad just not what I had in mind for this time frame.

Re: Are you where you thought you would be?

It's difficult for me to answer this question, because I never had a career or life path in mind when I was younger. I have a vague memory of taking a 'career skills' test at my high school guidance counselor's office. The test told me to be either a priest or a zookeeper.

So, I teach for a living, which is a combination priest/zookeeper job in some ways, I guess!

ETA: I am happy with my life now, but I've definitely had unhappy, frustrating times, and I still doubt myself once in a while.

to you, and to everyone else who's currently feeling unhappy with their situations. You are all probably tired of hearing this advice, but stay strong, because things really do get better! Please trust me -- I've been in depressions and ruts that I never, ever thought I'd escape.

Re: Are you where you thought you would be?

im so sorry that you are feeling this way. i cant give you advice but i will tell you that anything is possible if you set your goals and stick to them. also, sometimes you need to take a risk to get what you want.

im proud to say that im happy and proud of where i am now. part of it is due to being at the right place at the right time, and alot of it is due to being driven and making some risky but good decisions.

people thought i was crazy with the goals that i have set- however i have achieved them and i keep looking for higher and better things for myself.

good luck!

Do you happen to have a time machine I can borrow???

Honestly, I never thought I would be pushing 38 and not have children. Screw the career, I never had any ambitions - just wanted to pay be able to pay bills. Ho hum.
