Are you where you thought you would be?

Original post by heidla

I have been thinking a lot about where I pictured myself to be by now when I was younger. I am on track for most of it, but my career is in the toliet. I just can't seem to get myself to where I want to be in that area. I am even debating about moving away from my DH to try the theatre scene in London for a few months(I have been thinking about it forever). I just need to do something.

I was just wondering if everyone else is happy with where they are currently.

Nope

to you, and to everyone else who's currently feeling unhappy with their situations. You are all probably tired of hearing this advice, but stay strong, because things really do get better! Please trust me -- I've been in depressions and ruts that I never, ever thought I'd escape.

Do you happen to have a time machine I can borrow???

Honestly, I never thought I would be pushing 38 and not have children. Screw the career, I never had any ambitions - just wanted to pay be able to pay bills. Ho hum.

No one ever dies thinking they wish they had spent more time working--you have a wonderful husband, beautiful home, and gorgeous dogs!

I'm nowhere close to where I thought I would be...and on track to nowhere...oh well. things never turn out the way you thought they would.

I'm not where I thought I would be but I am very happy about that. I had a rough time in my childhood. I never thought I would be lucky enough to find someone as wonderful as my hubby. Nor did I think my career would be as rewarding as it is.

Not really. I thought I'd be halfway through TFA by now, or partway through my master's, not fighting the system over my last 30 bachelor's credits. I thought I would have studied abroad in college. I always always wanted to, when the time came I just didn't have the guts (or the money, but mostly the guts). I thought I'd go to a better college, but I was afraid to be 8 hours from FH, so I settled for 3. I kind of let things happen to me more than being proactive. I always wanted to be a teacher, a child psychologist or a lawyer (somehow to prtect children or students)...but in college I discovered that my real passion is directing, but that's a crazy world and I don't know how to get into it. I'm afraid I'll just keep taking the 'safe' route.

Re: Are you where you thought you would be?

When I was younger and I made my 'plan' I had this vision of doing everything younger....I can honestly say that I am very happy with where I am now in life - I am getting married next summer to a great man, I have a wonderful career as a teacher....and most importantly I am very happy with the person that I am.

Now that I think back to my old 'plan' of doing everything earlier in life, I would not go back and change it for the world. I lived my early 20's to the fullest - making new friends, going out and living life to the fullest, and getting to know myself. Now at 28 I look back and thank god that things turned out the way that they did!

i have always been a planner!! i am right on track...finishing up my ba in psyh on time (i graduate in may 06), applying to grad schools this fall for my masters, sharing an overpriced apt with my fh, getting married to my hs sweetheart next july (marraige is earlier than i thought but we've been together for over 4 1/2 and are so ready), careerwise i don't really have one yet but i do work fulltime as a toddler 'teacher' at a daycare center (my career will come after my degrees).
i turn 21 next wednesday :) ~lacey

not at all

I feel the only thing going for me right now is my marriage to a wonderful, caring man. The rest of it, I am so not happy about. By 30, I thought I would be in such a different place than I am today.

I am basically where I thought I would be... maybe a little behind with my career. I'll be finishing up my Master's this semester and starting to teach full-time. I thought I would have been teaching for a few years by now, but the requirements messed me up a bit. I always thought I'd be married by 25 and have kids by 30.. I'll be married when I'm 26.. so I guess I'm kinda where I thought I'd be..

I am actually way ahead of where I thought I would be.

I never thought I would be doing this well. I have an awesome wife, a great full-time job, a great side DJ business. Its almost too good to be true.

I just have to remember to try to stay focused and don't get too carried away because things can always change for the worse in a heartbeat.

I don't think I ever set many goals career wise. I keep thinking I should be earning more, but in the great scheme of things I'm not doing too badly.

I thought I would be married with a few kids by now, but I know now's not the right time for us for kids. maybe in a few years. I did think I would have a HOUSE! But we're barely going to be able to afford a 1BR apartment I know things'll work out alright in the end, I just feel I'm behind with my family life because I keep comparing myself with others (most of whom are older than I am anyway).
