Registered at Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby Gift Cards Would Be Greatly Appreciated
Um, isn't that last line really obnoxious? Maybe it isn't and I'm overreacting? What do you think?

Hahahaha!
I'll take this opportunity to explain my name:
I am marying a man whose family has the traditional big Long Island weddings and I knew nothing about how to do it! I was the first of my friends to be engaged, the first in my family (of my generation) nad where I work everyone is older. I knew nothing about weddings! Esp the Long Island kind.
But realy what is UP with asking for gift cards? Why not just ask for money and get it over with???
I thin I am particularly sour with this family because when this same couple got married they enclosed registry cards with their engagement party invitation. Yuck!

The only time I know when registry cards are in the invitation is for the bridal shower.

Re: Baby Shower Etiquette Question re: registries
I just got one of those. My FH said too bad he will send them a lullaby package from work. How rude to put 'gift cards appreciated' i mean come on, i would love to put 'cash only' on my invites but I would never do it!!!

Re: Baby Shower Etiquette Question re: registries
I don't think it's a big deal. At my baby shower, I got so many repeat items even though I was registered. And I tell ya, the last thing I wanted to do at 8 months pregnant was to haul butt to BRU to return these items. I would have been thrilled to get gift cards to use for the more useful things such as diapers, burp cloths, instead of all the cute things that are only used a couple of times I didn't know there was etiquette for baby shower invites, but what do I know, I'm not from NY.

Maybe they just mean that if your not going to buy from the registry could you atleast just give a gift card...that way you don't have people buying stuff else where that you don't want. I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Re: Baby Shower Etiquette Question re: registries
EWWWWWWWW...I don't like that. I mean I guess registries are obnoxious enough (and most ofus are guilty of that) but that git card line rubs me the wrong way....so weird.
ETA: I guess it makes sense in terms of being able to buy diapers, etc...but I see it this way..if peple want to get you a gift off a registry, they'll seek out your registry (putting in a card makes this easier) if they want to go off the registtrym theyw ill despite th4e card, and if they want to give cash, they'll give cash...people will od what they want, and I don't think that note will really compel people to do otherwise...i think registries are a bit obnoxious to begin with, it's bad enough, and then to just add that....I don't know..it' s a delicate situation...

I am not from NY either but ettiquette is ettiquette, it doesn't matter if it is a wedding, baby shower or birthday party. To put 'gift cards' on the invtie is just rude. I never thought about it from the point of someone 8 months pregnant either but still it is poor ettiquette.

Registry cards are OK for the bridal shower, I think, but not for the e-party.

Re: Baby Shower Etiquette Question re: registries
I thought about it some more, and weird as this sounds I think its like we all KNOW we have to bring a gift to a shower, but to come out and ask for what is basically cash feels like extortion (to exagerate a bit )
I mean, what if someone wanted to knit something for the baby (like those beautiful blankets or a sweater and hat - too cute!!!), or make a baby scrapbook, something that it not a lot of $$$ but they put their heart in to. Asking for gift cards makes it seem like that's what they are having the shower for: $$$.
Even if that's true, it's gross. I like showers b/c everyone gets excited and oooohs and aaahhhhhs over the cute baby stuff and gets to see the mom and pamper her for an afternoon.

Yes, this is very true! I didn't think about that aspect! I loved my shower even though I didn't get any gift cards!
