Has anyone here had or knows ofanyone who had their reception in their backyard? My fiance and I just bought a house, and are trying to find the most affordable way to have a wedding. We were thinking of renting a tent, tables, etc and having a dj and whatnot. Our new backyard is huge- 158 feet long. My fiance thinks it would be perfect, but I'm still kind of stuck on the idea of having it at a hall. Just not sure if the hall is going to be do-able since I want to get married next year. Its just really overwhelming to think about furnishing a house and paying for a wedding.
Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Backyard Wedding??
what is your parking situation like?
One of my former neighbors had a home-wedding. But, their home was actually an 'estate'.
They had a 3 car garage, and room for 42 cars in their driveway. But, on the day of their wedding, they had A LOT of overflow and cars were parked all down the streets...

Re: Backyard Wedding??
Well, thats a tough situation because we live on a semi busy road, so there is not alot of parking. We were trying to figure something out with a shuttle bus for our guests so that the parking did not inconvience our neighbors.

Re: Backyard Wedding??
Sometimes by time you rent the tables chairs and whatever else, you could do better in a hall.
My cousin got married at the American Legion Hall in Babylon. It was very nice. You didn't realize where you were except for the paper plates and the bar area- they had some mixed drinks and soda, but only had bud on tap for beer.
It was much less expensive then a traditional reception hall. Plus she didn't have to worry about toilets overflowing or rain. Also, if people drink at your house and get into a car accident you could be partially responcible.

Re: Backyard Wedding??
I think in theory, a backyard wedding seems cheaper, but I think you can find full service catering facilities that can accomodate your price range, and you can avoid the extra headaches that a backyard wedding might cause. You might want to look into getting married in the off season instead of the summer and you will get better prices for a hall. Plus, if you start planning now for a winter/early spring wedding for 2005, I'm sure you can get a deal because it's getting close to that time. Hope that helped. Do a search on here, there was a thread of affordable reception halls not too long ago.

Another consideration with a backyard wedding is making sure you have enough bathroom facilities, which might require that you rent one of those portable bathroom trailers or something.

Re: Backyard Wedding??
sometimes after all of the rentals and a caterer it is more expensive to have a back yard wedding. We looked into it as well. Plus you need to consider the restroom situation as well as what to do if it rains. Look into getting married in the winter, reception hall prices are much cheaper. If you want to get married in the summer, ask about a thursday night (if you would be ok with that) I found that thursday nights are sometimes half the price of a sat (depending on the hall) Good luck!

Re: Backyard Wedding??
We started to plan a wedding in our backyard, then we found a Hampton's Estate, but after we did the budget, we learned that it wasn't any cheaper...and most of all it was a bigger inconvenience. Fears of rain (more like a Hurricane) are what freaked us out the most!
Things to take into consideration: -Port-a-potties -tent, table, chairs, linens, china/glassware/flatware (if the caterer doesn't supply) -permits (you may need an electrical engineer to help setup and approve everything.) -parking (valet service/shuttle service) -caterer
It's not cheap if you plan on having a substantial amount of people.

Re: Backyard Wedding??
Check out www.middleislandcc.com. They have inclusive packages starting at 39.95 a person. I will think a little and see if I come up with more. It's worth looking into both options, a hall and a backyard wedding, then weight the costs and make your decision.
If you would rather invite alot of people then a hall would be better I think. I like the idea of an outdoor wedding but it's hard to dance on grass if you have a dj or band. You can rent flooring I guess but then it might not be an affordable wedding anymore. And then you have the parking situation. And the catering situation - is your kitchen big? And if it rains, yes you'll have tents but it could not turn out for the best. While if it's a sunny day it can be the best wedding, any rain will be hard to deal with, IMO.
If you want suggestions, our wedding was at Verdi's of Westbury. Very affordable, and the food is awesome.
Good luck with your decision - definitely price things out and then make your decision.

Re: Backyard Wedding??
Went to a backyard wedding where the entire septic system overflowed because it could not handle the amount of...flushing that was going on!!!
I did a huge price comparison for a tent wedding vs. Raphael, which is by no means cheap. And for the type of wedding I wanted, a tent would have sent my father to the poorhouse. Once you rent EVERYTHING, it is quite an expense.
On the other hand it totally depends what you want...it could be cheaper. A girlfriend of mine has her 50 person wedding in parents beautifully landscaped backyard, and all she did was string chinese lanterns and set up a small dance floor. THey hired a grilling company to come in and grill up some gourmet steaks and chicken, there were homeade apps by the mom and grandma, and everything was perfectly delicious and casual. They had a stereo playing music, we all danced the night away, we had a blast and I think she spent like, 5,000.
An upscale occasion in the backyard can be super expensive, but if you are looking to go casual, it can work.
Good luck!

Re: Backyard Wedding??
My FH's brother had a backyard wedding and it was way expensive in the end. How many people are you having and what is your price range? I researched all of the inexpensive halls in Suffolk so I might be able to give you some info.
