Well, I suffer from panic disorder and a few weeks ago they became so bad I had to take 2 weeks off from work (short term disability). I went back to work but they are still pretty frequent. They make me physically ill....I throw up, etc. I asked my boss if I can work 3 days a week for a month or so and she was so uncompassionate and rude. She told me 'you look fine, I dont understand what is wrong with you'. Than I told her if its that much of a big deal that I will put in my notice, and she said 'do what you have to do, I dont care.' I was hysterically crying on the phone while she was saying these things. How ignorant can you be to say, 'you look fine, I dont see anything wrong with you'?
I cant lose my job now b/c I am closing on my house in a couple of week and getting married in 2 months. I def. want to look for a new job (I've been thinking about it for awhile), but it is hard now b/c I will need off for my honeymoon. Need some hugs!!!!

If you have been with the co. for at least one year... you may be legally protected by FMLA, which allows you up to 12 weeks of leave time (unpaid) per year in order to care for yourself for a personal illness, or an ill immediate family member.
Also, the 12 weeks may be taken 'intermittently' in 15 minute increments.
You should call the company and request the forms.... you could have a nice EEOC suit if they are not complying.....

Re: Bad day....need your support and hugs
I know how you feel, i suffer from anxiety/panic attacks also, where it affects me physically, try to stay strong and positive, I know it's hard for others who have never been through this type of disorder, but do not lose your job over this.. my doctor said you have to force yourself to go even if you don't want too, if not the anxiety wins. Goodluck.. I hope you feel better soon! FM me if you would like talk.

Her bahavior is very ignorant!! Geez some people can be so incompassionate. I know exactly what you are going thru because I also suffer from bad anxiety and some people just don't understand how horrible it is for someone to go thru.
Lots of hugs for you sweetie, hang in there

For a case like this, I would definitely suggest getting some sort of written statement from your doctor. Most people with any type of mental illness 'look' fine, that's why so many people go untreated. I feel deeply for you, as someone who has suffered panic disorder as well. Good luck and start looking for that new job!
I completely agree. I went thru something like this a while back and my psychatrist documented my illness. THEY CANNOT FIRE YOU FOR A MEDICAL CONDITION.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Maybe try working part time if you can and get a note from your doctor. If it's that dibilitating for you maybe you can go on disability until you can get treatment. FM me if you have any questions or if you want to talk.

Thank you eveyrone for all of your support. Trust me, I have everything documented by a doctor and everything is on file with our HR department. I will just force myself to come into work and throw up on her desk if I have too. LOLOLOL. J/K. I am more upset that she is so insensitive and uncompassionate. But I shouldnt have expected anything else being she is, and always has been a biatch!!!!

I have anxiety/panic attacks as well... unless you have it no one knows what it is like.. the physical symptoms are so scary at times... BUT the best hing for me at least is to just push myself through the day and keep functioning at my everyday life.. the more you stay home I feel the worse it gets because then it's harder to leave. Go to work, keep your mind occupied.

Ew..what a b*tch. I would speak to your HR department about this and her. Also, get a note from your doctor. She cannot fire you for this and maybe you can look into taking a longer disability if your company offers that.

Re: Bad day....need your support and hugs
I'm sorry you are going through this. I know how horrible panic attacks are. I had them for sixth months straight last year. Then I finally talked to my gyno, and she said it could be caused by my birth control pills. Low and behold, I stopped the pills and have been fine since. I'm only throwing this out there just in case you or anyone else on the board is on the pill and suffering from panic attacks. It may really be hormonal. Regardless, though, it's probably better not telling your boss about these things. Tell her it's medically based. The truth is, most people who do not have this, will NOT understand (unless they have a psychology background). I guarantee your boss thinks you are making up excuses not to work. There's no need for her to know this type of stuff about you. Tell HR it's medically-based and you need time off. I honestly continues my life totally normal on the outside while this was going on- working, school, you name it. Doctors do say that if mental disorders stop you from doing activities in your daily life such as work that you should really try a medication.
