So, we buy them for Norton because they are supposedly good for their teeth and breath, and really expensive!!! Then someone tells DH that we should be careful because if they swallow a big piece they won't poop it out and they stay in their stomachs.......
We gave the last one to Norton 3 weeks ago, and last week he barked in the middle of the night and coughed/spit up a big piece of greenie!!!!! What!?!??!?! He ate the last one 3 weeks ago!!!!!
Well, at 6 this morning, he coughs up another piece!!!! I called Greenies to bawl them out, and they told me I can return them, no explanation.......
So, if you don't want your puppy with greenies stuck in his belly, don't give 'em Greenies!!!!

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
I believe there was an article in the paper about Greenies. I will try and locate it. But there aren't all that they are cracked up to be.
I'm sorry this happened to Norton!! I hope he is doing well and got all of it out!
Here is the article. I hope it works. I am not so good with links!

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
Yeah I have heard really bad things about them. A guy I work with had to take his dog in for surgery for bowel obstruction and the vet said they pulled out something big and green. Needless to say he doesn't buy them anymore!!!

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
Curliegirl - I have a question for you. What size is your dog and what size greenies do you buy? The reason I'm asking is because people have been saying that as long as you buy the right size for your dog you should be okay. I just want to make sure because everyone's freaking out, and here I thought all this time that I was okay with Ginny. We buy her the littlest ones because she's 10 pounds.

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
I asked my vet about this a few weeks ago and he said you should buy the pet the size greenie they are supposed to have and don't give it to them all the time. We give my dog one almost once a week and he's absolutely fine.

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
I bought him the medium sized ones, he's 5 months old and weighs almost 60 lbs....
The problem isn't so much the size, it's that when he gets to the end of it, he eats it.....so no matter how big it originally was, it still gets down to about and inch by an inch, and then he swallows the whole thing.
Sometimes I see it getting little and throw it away.....

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
I just pulled this off the Greenies website: Greenies® Jumbo for dogs over 100 lbs/45 kg Greenies® Large for dogs 50 to 100 lbs/22-45 kg Greenies® Regular for dogs 25 to 50 lbs/11-22 kg Greenies® Petite for dogs 15 to 25 lbs/7-11 kg Greenies® Teenie™ for dogs 5 to 15 lbs/2-7 kg Lil’Bits™* for toy breed dogs under 5 pounds, puppies less than 6 months old or dogs that “gulp.” Lil’ Bits™ can also be used as a training treat or to encourage consumption of dog food (sprinkle it on their food) for dogs that refuse to eat.

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
I used to give Max the petite ones....he weighs 18 lbs. I stopped giving them to him for similar reasons--one night, when he hadn't had a greenie in a awhile he started choking and coughing and out came a chuck of greenie. I think when he gets to the end of it he just eats big chunks-but I'm not taking chances, I've heard too many bad things about these recently.

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
Greenies are not for dogs that swallow things whole. If your dog does not chew his food when he eats...he should not get greenies. I also would never give a dog a greenie unattended, and when my dog is close to the end where I feel there could be a problem, I throw the rest away.

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
I just won't give them to her. I have a brand new bag of them that I am throwing out...there is no way I'm taking the chance of her getting a blob of greenie in her stomach that has to be removed.

You can return them and get your $$$ back if you have the receipt. If you don't you can still exchange them for something else, they're expensive don't waste your money!!!!

Re: Bad Greenies!!!!
The same happened to my Boogie. One night he was choking after a few days when he ate one...he coughed up a big chunk or greenie. My mom had bought them and we dont have the receipt. I was so upset cause he was so sick from it
