Bad Habit. . . Help!

Bad Habit. . . Help!

So, I bite my nails and pick my cuticles. . . like, really bad and I've tried stopping so many times. Well, I just put 1 and 1 together: for the wedding, of course pics of my rings will be taken and I wear my ring on my... FINGER! So, therefore, my bad habit will be photographed... Does anyone have any advice on how to break this?? Any help will be very appreciated! Thanks

I put on Acrylic nails. It really helped, because you dont look to bite the acrylic, and after a few months, you remove them and the habit is broken... and if you go back, get them put on again. Just make sure you carry a nail file (for the rest of your life, acrylic nails or not), because if one nail breaks, you will be chewing on it again in a heartbeat. But Target has these cute matchbook-type things with little disposable nail files in them that are great!

That is good advice! Also, I used to go for weekly manicures and that helped me stop! I feel your pain though! I am a former biter myself!

I did the same thing last year for my e-party and for a while I went for fill-ins. Then one day I got sick of sitting at the nail salon for so long so I took the fake ones off. At first your real nails will be very weak so you have to really be careful and make sure you get a manicure weekly. Now I have nice natural nails and I love them! I still can't believe that I have nails and am no longer a nail biter!!

I used to do the same.
I just got grossed out by riding the subway everyday that I do not want to put my hands near my face or in my mouth.

It should be enough motivation that your hands are going to be photographed to stop biting them.
Another thing that worked for me is going to get my nails done. Since I was spending the money to have my nails and cuticles look nice I didn't want to bite my nails anymore.

There is a nail polish you can buy for nail biters. It has a horrible taste and it kind of burns your tongue. Check at cvs and places like that. It worked on me.

It's called 'Mavala Stop' here is a link to wear you can order it.

I too used to be a cuticle biter! My hands were so gross, that finally one day I said to myself this has to got to stop!! Weekly manicures definitely helped me to stay away from my fingers!!!

i bit my nails my ENTIRE life, up until about 6 months before FH and I got engaged...

i just had to make a conscious decision to STOP. i didnt put on tips or any kind of fake nails, because those tend to make your nails weaker... then they break... then you want to bite. so i just had my nails done EVERY week and just consciously tried not to bite them (or my cuticles!). i think you just have to really make the choice to stop... it took a little while, but i've been bite-free for over a year now! and i always get compliments on my nails... they are SO strong now!

Yes, if you put the acrylic nails on ....you will not be able to bite them.

Try it
It has worked for me

I've used the bad tasting nail polish and I swear by it. I am a really bad nail bitter but even if my fingers get close to going in my mouth, the nailpolish tastes disgusting! Just make sure you re-apply it ever couple of days so it stays potent.

Good luck -- I know how hard it is to stop

This polish called 'nailtiques' worked great for me. Then when they got long enough that I wasn't embarassed I started going for weekly manicures. I also have sally hansen cuticle cream for my dry cuticles. It's a little sticky but it works really well.

I actually have the same horrible habit...and I actually just took my acrylic nails off, and sure, they grew, but they were thin and weak....so now I have reverted back to biting and picking at them, and they are now all bitten off. I have searched for that bad tasting nail polish, but, I also don't think it would stop me. So...I feel your pain!! I am trying...but knowing myself...I will go back to acrylics...but I just want nice natural nails!!

Re: Bad Habit. . . Help!

Does anyone have any advice for how I (a guy) can stop? I am opposed to getting acrylic nails, and a weekly manicure is not really in the cards for me either... I've really tried the deciding and stopping, didn’t work, even tried the bad tasting nail polish, but that made me bite them more so I could get the icky stuff off. The last two new years I’ve made it my resolution, and even tried giving it up biting my nails for lent too, still didn’t work. I've told all my friends too, but that has just made me a closet nail biter so they don’t catch me in the act. Anyone have any other ideas???

Thanks!

Re: Bad Habit. . . Help!

Thank you all! I didn't know there was a whole club of nail bitters!! I've already tried that icky polish but would you beleive I got used to it and would do it anyways?? (This might help the gentleman on this thread tho ) So, I think its off to the nail place for me.... Well, this weekend hehe This is the one thing FH requests of me and obviously it would benefit me too. Thanks again!

I used to bite my nails as well and I could never let them grow! I would end up breaking them so a few years back I put on my tips and they haven't been off since. Love them and I can't imagine not having these strong nails. My real nails do grow under the fake ones, but I still prefer the stronger faker kind

anybody have any advice for a violinist who can't have nails? that gross tasting stuff doesn't work for me and there's no way i can have fake nails or else i can't play!! my nails will never be long, but i just wish i could stop biting/picking. grrr.

Re: Bad Habit. . . Help!

how about maybe silk wrap instead of acrylic since they make your real nails so weak, or like others suggested about getting manicures weekly

Yeah, I used to play the viola and no matter how hard i tried was unable to play with tips. I would think that a nice manicure would sway you from picking at your fingers cuz you don't need to have long nails for it to look cute.
