Bad trip to the dentist

Original post by july06bride

I have been having some pain in my tooth and jaw lately. I usually go back and forth to LI for cleanings and stuff, but the pain got too unbearable today so i found a dentist... thinking it was a simple cavity, i went in feeling comfortable...

needless to say, I have a lot going on...4 cavities, my tmj which is getting worse and I MUST get a nightguard, and if that doesnt work i have to get something else, which i dont know what it is called... and i have to have surgery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cavities and surgery will be monday/ which means i am still in pain until then!

so sad, and in pain
i hate that word...surgery! even though it is minor, the word frightens me!
send good thoughts

what kind of surgery do you have to have though?

i feel your pain- i've been on Vicadin all week, and cant wait to get this crap taken care of on saturday

i'm supposed to take vicodin for some surgery i'm having next friday, but i'm afraid to take it. Is it making you sick to your stomach? Is it actually helping the pain?

No. it made me a little dizzy/ lightheaded at first- but i really try not to take medication unless i HAVE to, so when i do, it hits me kind of hard (though in these past few weeks, ive built up quite the tolerance to Vicodin and Ibuprofen ). Im taking Penicillan right now too, and that actually makes me more naucious than anything- but i was fine with the Vicodin. they say if you take it on a full stomach, its not AS effective, BUT i always eat before i take it (i feel like if you take most medications on a completely empty stomach, thats when youre more likely to get sick from it ). But thats just what works for me

I only took 1/2 a pill at a time and as hard as it was I has to eat w/ it otherwise I'd get sick, Also please drink pleanty of fluids w/ it. I know that sounds silly, but if I didn't I felt really out of it.

I have to have surgery on the operqulum... I have an abcess like thing on my gums where i had my wisdom teeth out- years ago..
the cavities are painful now- but i am not worried about getting them as much as the fact of getting it ALL done in one day.i guess it is better to just get it over with-
thanks for all your kind words, i really need to reassurance!

I freaked out before hand and it was a waste of energy for me, so I hope you don't do the same , they'll def. put you out for the surgery, don't worry about a thing! :

So sorry to hear about all of your anxiety about the dentist - we are not all that bad

You should try warm compresses and advil for the discomfort in your TMJ - the 'surgery' for the operculum is very routine and you should be just fine after - maybe a little uncomfortable -

As far as the cavities - these days filling cavities shouldn't cause you ANY discomfort - if you need to take vicodin after - you need to find a new dentist!!!!

Good luck and feel free to FM with any questions

Attn2details , I find that offesive of you to say. I see the best dentist in NY, he attended a great school, he taught dentistry in Europe, he's recievd numorous awards, has a high profile patient list Liza Minelli, Jackie Mason & I all see the same dentist) and has stopped taking patients b/c he's just to busy.

My dentist is the type of Dr. who calls the next day to see how I'm feeling after a procedure, who drove home from Vermont over President's day weekend b/c I was in a tremondous amount of pain. I needed to take Vicodin, not b/c my Dentist is not qualifed, but b/c I had a problem, that caused a severe amount of pain. I agree that for cavities & such you don't need to take anything but for other complications & procedures Pain Killers are required.

it really does depend on the dentist. my boss only gives the prescription just in case.
