Bakery Problems
So, when we booked the venue we didn't really care about the cake in the beginning nor is a main focal point now - a cake is a cake we can always order from somewhere else if we don't like the option BUT the approved vendors were:Rolling Pin Bakery that has AWFUL yelp reviews and their website seems eh and Biscotti Girl that has NO website and no yelp reviews.
Being that I live 2 hrs from my venue I was hoping someone could help me out with personal experiences at either of these bakeries or suggest another place?

My venue either deals with Rolling Pin or a place called Stanley's.We got samples from Rolling Pin and we liked them. We were thinking about the banana custard and chocolate cake. Really wanted cannoli cream filling, but wasn't impressed with it; FH is Italian so he KNOWS lol.
Stanley's is a smaller place closer to my venue, literally down the road. We are going with them and getting raspberry jam and chocolate cake. They are more of the traditional kind of bakery. They are less about looks, like I think Rolling Pin is, but taste is what matters to me.
I would've been happy with either one of them, I just liked the raspberry jam better than the banana custard.

I actually tried sample cupcakes from Rolling Pin at the Atlantis showcase over the summer, and FH and I LOVED them!

Thanks so much for your input. FH is obsessed with chocolate as is my family so he knows a good chocolate when he tastes one...I just read the yelp reviews for Rolling Pins and was totally turned off there were only like 2 good comments.

Check Wedding Wire and The Knot ... they have 80-100 reviews on the Rolling Pin.

I've never been to Rolling Pin before but I've tried their cake and cupcakes a couple of times and they tasted amazing! Which is rare for me because I'm not a big fan of cake. I say go check out both places and form your own opinion and see who you like more.

Our cake was from Rolling Pin and it was AMAZING!! I will say the samples were lacking, but the cake was DELICIOUS! When my husband gave me the first bite I was surprised.

Wedding Wire had a lot of mixed reviews about them as well people said they lacked decorating skills ... another thing im really not excited about is you have to pay to taste the cakes? That's a little ridic to me. They are included in the package you would think by letting people have tastings for free more people would want to go to them but to pay for each type of cake your interested in? A little pathetic for my liking.

I agree with the paid tastings, which is kind of why I'm glad I got to taste it at the showcase. My venue also includes a cake from rolling pin (which seems to be popular around here because the lessings venues I looked at had them as well). I'm also worried about the mixed reviews, I'm just not sure if I have the money in my budget to get another cake somewhere else. I want to do cupcakes but I don't like having to decorate the stand myself especially since I'm not crafty or creative.

Ok glad I am not alone on this one HAHA I was starting to think I was just a cake snob. I don't even know anything about the Biscotti Girl Bakery they have no site no yelp page nothing so they are a complete mystery to me but I did e-mail them.My mom says just pay for someone else to do it but I don't know that I wanna spend more money on a cake when this one is included in the package but it sucks because we would still be paying just to try the cake! Imagine if some people just guess on a flavor because they don't wanna pay? You assume chocolate or vanilla are safe bets but these reviews are scary...
Not sure what to do at this point. Wasn't expecting to read that I had to pay to taste... that's a real shame.

I thought the paying for samples was a little wacky too, BUT it was actually kind of fun to sit at home and try filling and cake with FH. We tried chocolate with this flavor, chocolate with that flavor.

Interesting thoughts you have here, Okellies. I wrote to the guy at the venue who we booked through and asked him about all this and for information on the other place because nobody seems to know anything about them so he said he was going to look into this and get back to me.

Rolling Pin made the cake for my cousin's baby shower 2 weeks ago. It was very nicely decorated (nothing special) but I wasn't a fan of the cannoli filling (dad-to-be's request). The cake part was fine.

Good Morning. This is an interesting post. I was just going to start one on it! I am getting married in August and the Rolling Pin is included in our wedding package. I grew up in Setauket and my family has used the Rollin Pin for holidays etc. It is an excellent bakery! However, my fiance and our families tried our wedding samples yesterday - they were awful! I was shocked. We are not complainers and are definitely not picky about baked goods!!! Don't know what to do? Or what filling to select to be safe? Any suggestions out there?

Bakery Problems
I'm totally worried about our bakery choices as well. After we do tastings and if we are not happy, I may look into finding our own bakery. Dessert is a big deal to me, so I want to make sure my cake looks good and tastes good lol. Has anyone tried getting a credit for their cake from the venue if using an outside bakery? The cake is included in our package.. Maybe even putting it towards a house vendor we are using? As far as safe wedding cake fillings/flavors, I'd go with yellow/vanilla cake and a simple filling. People are picky with chocolate cake and I think it's easier to tell when that is done poorly lol.
