Band or D.J.

I'm not sure which to choose a Band or a D.J.? I thought I wanted a band, but I've been to a few weddings in the past few weeks where they had band (one of them cost $7,000) and I didn't even feel like dancing once - and believe me, I like to dance. It seemed like such a waste. It made me start wondering if spending all that money is worth it, just for the LIVE music - will a D.J. be more fun? Has anyone else been through this dilemma yet? THANKS!

I am chosing a DJ over a band for a few reasons. I like the songs the original way. Many bands put their own twists to them and I don't like that. Also bands take many breaks, while a DJ can continue to play music. And you have to feed ALL the members of the band. With a DJ it means only feeding 1 or 2 additional people. I have not chosen a DJ yet, but I do plan on giving them a pretty specific play list. Even making a CD (on computer) of the songs he does not have. A band can only play songs that they know. I have been to many more weddings where a DJ gets people moving rather than a band. Although Im sure people will insist a band is the only way to go, I prefer a DJ.

A DJ is trained to get people dancing, if your guests are not responding to a type of music, then it switches to something else. A band can't really switch so it is a hit or miss

To put it simply, The best weddings I ever went to had a DJ. The most boring had bands.

I've heard that bands are classy and DJ's are tacky, but I'm a DJ girl all the way! I prefer hear the music I like in it's 'natural' form. : )

We listened to several DJs but decided on a band instead. I think when live music is playing it 'feels' different. Just my opinion...but our family, my FI and I love bands. We have an arrangement on the breaks, only 2 breaks and music will be played at that time. But I do think you can`t 'cheese-out' and get a cheap band, because you get what you pay for. :)

I think it depends on the couple and the band. I went to a wedding where the DJ wasn't so great and the best wedding I ever went to had a band. We chose a band after going to see them play and they sounded great and played all different types of music. I think it depends on what you and your FI think will work for your guests. Good luck.

I have seen bad DJ''s too. If you choose a DJ, remember there not all good just because the music is the original. I chose a band too. I think its more appropriate for a formal wedding. Good Luck

In Defense of a Band

It is really a personal opinion about this. From my experience I have found that there are many different levels of bands. Keep in mind when you go to weddings, the type of music that is played is a function of what the bride and groom requests. I have been to weddings with boring bands, but I have seen some band that are so great. It is personal decision, but if you do want to listen to some bands, I can give you the name of some really great ones.

I am having a band, but DJs are a lot better than they used to be. What kind of music do you like? If you like things that are very synthesized, go with the DJ. It is simply a matter of taste and budget.
