Hey everyone! So I have no idea if I want a band or DJ. Djs I think can play more variety and take more requests but bands can be very fun too and live music is almost always good right? What do you girls think?
Band or DJ and why?
(I'm Italian/American and my FH is Puerto Rican so I need great all around music!)

we went w/ a DJ that had some add on options like percussionist, steel drum player, etc.... we got the steel drum player for CH.

We went with a band and it was the BEST thing we did. They were really amazing, everyone was so impressed people were dancing all night long. There is nothing better then good live music. Everyone is different though I would suggest going to a showcase...thats how we decided. We saw a DJ perform and then a band and we just knew the DJ was not for us.

We chose a DJ mainly because of cost. IMO if you're going to get a band it better be a GREAT band, otherwise the whole vibe of the reception can be thrown off. With a DJ, you know what you're getting regarding the sound of the songs/music and they can likely be more diverse in the type of music they play.

For the church, we are having an organ, singer and trumpet, for the CH we are having a string quartet, and for the reception we are having a band. It wasn't even a question for us bc we always wanted a band and our parents always wanted a band and since my parents are paying, it worked out well. We are obsessed with our band and I have to tell you that they make the songs sound just like the original artist. HOWEVER, if you get a cr@ppy band, the wedding is going to su ck. Sorry to be blunt, but it's the truth. But that doesn't mean you need to spend 15k on a band either. FM me if you'd like the info on my band. They have lots and lots of showcases so definitely check them out.

We are going with a DJ because it costs $1000 and a band STARTS at $6000. I could never in my life justify spending so much on enterainment that lasts for a few hours. JMO.

Definitely agree. Don't go for the band unless they are fabulous and versatile.

i think it really is a personal thing...i think you should go to both dj and band showcases and see what feels right for you!
we LOVE live music so we are having a flute, cello and violin for the ceremony and band for the ch and reception....we just did not love the dj's we were seeing...we reeally loved a band and how much fun and lively they are...
again...i really think its a personal thing...

We're going with a band. It is def more pricey but we felt a wedding has a different feel with live music. We alos loved the look and energy of our band and felt it made it more formal.
It is true though, that there are some songs we woudl like to have that the band cant do (i.e. some ethnic songs).. but we are going to have a CD with a few songs on it to take care of that. I know some people use a CD for their first dance song too if they must have the original.

I chose DJ for budget purposes and because they can play whatever music we want. FH and I are both Puerto Rican so we felt a DJ could fulfill our needs better than a band.

We went with a DJ for a lot of the same reasons people have mentioned... we want to hear the songs by the original artists.
Also we are extending our reception by an hour so we want them to play remixes/dance music (with words) for the last hour since we are party people. We got a DJ and an MC to keep the party going.

I say dj because I feel like they are more versatile and can really play any and everything....plus you can get an mc to get it more lively

Neither! How about a dj with a percussionist? Best of both worlds... Thats what im having at my wedding... You hear the real song but still have that live element that really makes the music POP!

We are doing a band. We just booked yesterday. My sister got married on Sunday and her band was amazing. It sealed the deal. I booked them the next day. My sister asked for hip hop and they played black eyed peas, alicia keys, michael jackson, no doubt, shakira and it sounded just like the original artist. plus a band provides so much entertainment to watch them play. I totally say go with the band!

Band!!! Everytime I'm at a wedding with a band..everyone is dancing! I hope thats the case for my wedding!

DJ because:
1. Bands are wayyy overpriced 2. DJs play originals 3. A band might not know a song you really want. 4. I feel that a band takes away from the wedding b/c it feels like more of a performance.

I prefer a band.
I think a band adds a little something 'special' to the wedding that a DJ doesn't - I like the live feel, I think that they can feed off of the crowd better and that adds an amazing element to the evening.
DJ feels a little less personal to me.

Def a DJ...I do not like bands....I don't think it sounds right for the music we like (Rap/Hip Hop). There is a smoother transitions between songs also.

we chose a band b/c it went well with the feel we wanted for our wedding. We both love live music and guests are always blown away when they see a band. A good band can play anything and if you have a specific song, they can learn it if they do not know it. The bands sound just like the original artists too. its crazy but they do. For us we knew it had to be a band.
