Banks for joint accounts

Banks for joint accounts

What banks does everyone use for their wedding fund? We need a checking account with a check card but don't want to pay fees or have a minimum balance.

I've used the same bank all my life and I don't know what's out there. Please offer any suggestions you have.

ETA: Thanks!

We opened our account at Commerce Bank and I have been very happy with it. They are open 7 days a week and 2 nights they are even open until 8. Also you can use your debit card at any other banks ATMs and they dont charge you any fees.

Washington Mutual - I totally recommend them.....there's no fees and they have great hours - open till 8 and on sat....also - I have been to many of them and the customer service is always great!

If you live in Suffolk, try Teachers Federal Credit Union. No fees, really great service, online banking, etc. You have to be eligible--click here to see their requirements, which are actually pretty broad.

If you can, try to set up an ING online savings account along with a checking account. They give you THREE PERCENT interest and you can move money back and forth between ING and your checking account. Very good if you're trying to save money. (and often keeps you from spending if you have to think about putting it into checking)

Re: Banks for joint accounts

I used to use WaMu and they do have great free checking and no hidden fees, however their custmer service or lack therof has really appalled me and actually screwed me up financially. I was NOT happy with them. I was trying to take out a loan for school and the frst woman I went to laughed me out of the bank. She thought my ID was fake and wouldn't believe that I was over 21, etc. SO RUDE. Then when i went to another banka nd took out the loan, they said I'd get my first staement in 3 months. I didn't remember when exactly 3 months had passed and they had a computing error and never sent me a statement.bill. So I didn't pay it on time..so they cancelled my loan, considered me in default and took the full amount of the loan (a lot of $$...most of what I had) out of my savings. I was so angry. They apologized and said they would reinstate the loan but they never did.

Now we use north fork. They're charging me a fee when they shoudn't be, so I have to straighten that out.

I wasn't pleased at all with WaMu either. So far though, I have been very pleased with Ridgewood savings bank. I know they do free checking but I have no idea about their bank cards.

Our wedding money is at ING (3% interest) but I move it to my personal account (Citibank) to buy things.

I also have accounts at Citibank Private Bank, HSBC, Chase (mortgage only not checking or savings) and Washington Mutual (business checking with no fees).

FI uses HSBC too and has been since before we met. He doesn't have any complaints other than having to hike out to Queens a couple of times since he lost his bank card and his signature card is only on file at the branch in Queens where he opened the account years ago.

ETA - I do not pay any fees and have an ATM card for all the checking/savings accounts.

Bethpage Credit Union. Anyone on LI can join it. IT IS AWESOME. One of the most friendly and helpful banks I have ever used. They don't have mins. on thier accounts and thier accoutns make great interest.
