How much would you give as a couple to a close friend of the family? Is it similar to a wedding gift? Thanks!

Re: bat mitvah gift?
a jewish tradition and special number is 18. So traditionally most people try to give a gift in a multiple of $18. That's truly up to you though b/c the number won't be even. A gift of $150-200 is probably very nice for a close family friend. If the party is being held in the temple where the bat mitzvah is, it's probably on the more expensive side, but if it's held outside it might not be AS expensive. HTH!

Re: bat mitvah gift?
I gave $150 last weekend to my dad's cousin's daughter as a couple going. It felt like the right amount for us, budget-wise and relation-wise.
I'd say go a little less than at a wedding (at least that's what I'd do). Had it been a wedding for the same relation / closeness, I would've given $250 probably.
