Bedroom Closet Organizing??

Bedroom Closet Organizing??

Since we're redoing our floors, and taking out carpets, we're also gutting out the inside of the closets and repainting and re-shelving, etc.

In the bedroom we currently have those white shelves, kinda like a gate (forgot what theyre called) they are sold at home depot in pieces, can even be used for pantry shelves.
Well they are being taken down, and I think we need more hanging space. since we have an armoire and several drawers for folded stuff...

Anyone have any creative closet organizing tips or websites? I think we want mostly hanging space, but of course one or 2 shelves. and since the two 'no longer SPARE' bedrooms' closets are now TAKEN, we definately need to utilize our own closet space. It will be for everyday stuff only (Storage and out of season type stuff is in the attic or we have lots of closets downstairs..)
and I REALLY HATE shoes even NEAR the bedroom, so I dont plan to have a shoe rack, I really prefer shoes in a storage-downstairs out of sight closet.

Ideas? Suggestions of what brands/styles to buy?
Thanks

Re: Bedroom Closet Organizing??

I recent organized my closet. It was a 2 rod sort of closet with sliding doors.

The first thing I did was take the doors down and replace with curtains. The doors were a pain plus blocked the light which made it so hard to find stuff.

Second, i took out the bottom rod and did a major purge of clothing. The top rod is now organized with all the things I use for the season. I could barely believe i got everything to fit on one rod but being realistic about what i was going to keep in the closet helped.

I then put this plastic drawer thing that I got at Costo on the right side. It holds all bras/undies/pajama pants, etc.. but you could use it for anything. Much cheaper than buying a dresser and has see thru drawers so i can see whats inside.

Left side i bought these white shelve things from Target. Very cheap. I put shoes on there as well as folded scarves, a box of trinkets, etc..

I bought some hooks so i could hang belts and purses on the side from Restoration hardware but you could find good ones at Target, Kmart, etc..

I store seasonal items in big plastic bins from Target and Home Depot...they are about $5 each I think.

My last thing I have yet to finish but plan on doing it soon is storage of jewelry. I never have anywhere to put it neatly so I bought these 2 magnetic panel things from Ikea (that are used to hold kitchen knives) and Im buying these little tin glass tops that Im going to put jewelry in. That way i can keep it all easy to find and organized without having to take up any table space.

Not sure if any of this applies to your closet but hopefully that helps a bit.

Re: Bedroom Closet Organizing??

Good ideas stef!
Weve done MAJOR 'get rid of it' with stuff. The charities have been my best friends this past month. Came once last week, are coming again this week. and 2 more in the next month. Getting rid of things AtoZ!

I dont have all the room in this specific closet to do all that you did, but I might use some of those ideas in my downstairs closet. especially the see through drawers.

thanks

Tara-thanks for the websites!

Stef - Great idea! If you don't mind can you post a pic of your new closet? I can't picture the size/width and I want to know if it's similar to the closet I'll have when I move.

Thanks!

WHen we remodeled our house, our contractor did a kind of 'California Closet' thing with ours. I'll take a picture of them for you, He was fabulous...I have more storage than I've ever dreamed about.

It's nice, all cherry.

Re: Bedroom Closet Organizing??

currently i have a pretty big closet with high ceilings...so I am lucky...

here are some pics:

this is my side...since it is a high ceiling there is no problem putting in a high bar and a low bar (except for dresses...but I use DH's side for that)

the shoe shelves are from BBB...$10

and DH's side:
the wooden thing is a quilt stand...but DH uses it to put his work clothes (hes in computers - so no suits needed...)on when he gets home...

Erica, thanks for the photos
We had the same exact shelving, except I think the order of it was all wrong.
It was lets say the letter 'T' (if you were to draw my closet on paper) all shelves, and the outside of that letter was 2 little hanging areas... (this is one of those things I can say once to my sister and she 'Gets it' and everyone else doesnt ) the way we can explain things to eachother cracks me up.. like a secret code that makes sense only to us..

I guess we'll wind up buying the same shelves just different parts...

Anna, we have the same shelving in our walk-in, and there are a thousand different ways you can 'configure' the parts to make it useful for your space. I think they even have a website, where you can put in the dimensions of your closet, and see what your options are - (John would probably LOVE that!)

We have used the same system in our kitchen pantry, and DH just started installing it in our garage, too. I wasn't really thrilled about it in the garage, since they are very expensive, but he had so much leftover from the two previous projects, there wasn't much more to buy to make good use of the leftovers!

Thanks for the website claud
I didnt realize they were very expensive
I kinda like the poles to hang things from, i wonder if I should just to the old traditional 2 poles with shelves on top of them
We can even keep and reconfigure the ones he just took out.. but I like redoing things NEW when we're redoing things

Oh I have to try that 'Design your closet' thing on the website
I think theyre great for the garage too.
