best man ??

best man ??

So FH picked his friend to be Bestman. He has no brothers so he chose his friend. Now his friend came very late to our engagment party and didn't even give a gift. Not even a card. So FH's parents and mine want FH to pick someone else. But FH already asked him. And his BM is always late for everything. Any time we tell him to meet at a certian time he is atleast 2hrs late. I am afraid he will be late for the wedding. What do you think he should do??

Not to be a b*tch, but is not giving a gift really reason to ask this person not to be the best man? Traditional etiquette states that gifts should even be given at engagement parties anyway, and even though most people do, gifts should never be expected for anything. I'm sorry but I read that and I was like 'wow', to mention not giving a gift and assuming someone close to your FH would be late to your wedding, I just think that's not too cool. TAlk to the guy, communication usually works.

Has your FH talked to his friend about what a best man does? Do you think maybe his friend just doesn't know what he's supposed to be doing? Did your FH ask his friend to be his best man or did he tell his friend that he's going to be it? I'm wondering because maybe his friend isn't interested in it but is just going along with it...and if your FH sits him down to talk about it he'll graciously refuse and then FH can pick someone else...

that really isn't the reason I was just saying that he didn't give a gift. What I really was saying is that he is unreliable. I am afraid he isn't going to make it to the wedding on time. And even the rehersal too.

I think Kerry was just trying to give an example of how unreliable this friend may be. And while I understand that not giving a gift isn't considered unreliable, it could show that he won't take the wedding and being the BM seriously.....

Kerry, definitely let him know where he needs to be when he needs to be there way ealier than what's really planned. Also, you and FH should talk to him and let him know that he really needs to take the responsibility of being Best Man seriously, and SHOW UP ON TIME!

Good luck!

he already asked him to be best man and he said he was honored. But he really hasn't said to much about it since then. And like I said he was late and everything. And now everyone in the family knows and keeps telling FH to not have him cause he is not reliable.

I understand what you are saying but the guy does sound a bit irresponsible, i think she is just concerned about that...As a best man you do have some duties and if he is irresponsible it can make somebody uneasy...Not only that but again i understand your point about the gift, but personally if i go to a close friends e-party i wouldn't go empty-handed, besides that point i think the issue is that she is afraid of him showing up late to the church or being irresponsible some other way.

If this guy really has been proven to be unreliable, maybe your FH could just talk to him about what is expected of him and see if he is really up for it.
He should have been ontime - actually early for your engagement party, but maybe he just didn't know. It stinks how complicated other people make everything for us

And even Fh was dissapointed in him. Even when we sent out the invite he said he was brinign some girl. then he said he wasn't then he was and never even sent back the RSVP. and then last min after he said he was bringin her he called and she she wasn't comming but he was going to bring one of his friends. And then he showed up 2 hrs late and with no one. And my parents had to pay for that extra plate!!!! I have no idea what to do.

On a more serious note, this guy does sound very irresponsible/unreliable. I would definitely have your FH talk to him about it and tell him how you guys feel. Good luck!

lol...my friends who know me best usually play that trick on me. they tell me to be somewhere a half hour early. i never catch on, and am usually there just on time.

they lovingly refer to it as 'jeanette time'.

that plan back fired on some people who did that to me lol... i realized it right away when they did it, so other times when they were actually telling me the right time, i showed up 30 mins later just bc i thought they were lying lol

Re: best man ??

I'd either tell him a time earlier than when you want him there. Or..

Sit down with FH, you, and BM and explain that he has to be on time for these things and how important his role in the wedding is to you and FH. If he can't do it though I'd ask FH to pick someone else... that'd make me really nervous that he wouldn't be on time for the important stuff.
Also not showing up with a card or gift.. idk how to read that one. I'd at least show up with a card.
