My mom and I went looking for dresses for her for the wedding (i know it is late)
We only went to nordstrom's but found this GORGEOUS black gown that isnt really only black - it has silver and champagne beading on it with black lace and backed by champagne satin towards the bottom - It has spaghetti straps, v neck empire waist.
She had tried on a few there but this one looks awesome on her! We are still going to look at afew more places -
BUT, do you think it is wrong for the mother of the bride to where a predominately black gown?? I personally have no problem with it - i wanted black bridesmaid dresses but got vetod by it because my BMs said it looked too funeral-like - this gown however in no way could ever be worn at a somber event.

Re: Black Dress for Mother of the Bride??
I personally dont think there is anything wrong with it. Esp. if it looks great on her and since its not even all black. I think the most important thing is she is happy in it. Plus like you said she can re-use it which is great!

Re: Black Dress for Mother of the Bride??
if it has that beading, it should look nice...
I was worried about how my grandma would look, but with the silver embroidery, I thought it showed up very nicely in photos!
I would tell your mom to go for it. My mom wore a black dress to my sister'swedding

Re: Black Dress for Mother of the Bride??
My mom asked me if i minded if she wore black for my wedding and I had no idea why she was asking!!! i guess some will say its not 'appropriate' for MOB to wear black, but i think that is crazy. IMO black is very classy, and very flattering too!!!! I would definitely have her get it!

Re: Black Dress for Mother of the Bride??
IMO if it has some white or, in your case, silver it's okay. I understand why people say black at a wedding is somewhat morbid, but it you do it right, it can definitely be gorgeous. I'm probably going to have my BMs wear black with white embroidery or detail b/c 1-I think it will reflect the white in my dress beautifully and 2-they MAY actually wear it again!
Go for it...

I hate when people say you should or shouldn't do something. If you like it, DO IT. My mother's gown is black, with some gold beading on it. She looks stunning in it.

I think it would be terrific. If it look great on her her face will show it and THAT is what you want your wedding pix to capture.

IMO opinion there is nothing wrong with it. Black is elegant, slimming, etc. People will have a comment on everything, so if you both like it, go for it.

Re: Black Dress for Mother of the Bride??
I think it's totally fine!! My mom just got hers yesterday (Saks in Garden City is going out of business and everything is at least 20% off) and it's black. FMIL's is black and I believe Step-FMIL will be in black as well. Oh yeah, and FGMIL will be in black.
Boy, I hope they're not trying to tell us something

I can't believe this. What is happening in the retail world? Is Saks Fifth Ave. having trouble also?

Come to think of it, I totally agree. We have our own shoe store and thankfully many customers still value the service and personal attention a family owned business offers. However, there are more and more people who think nothing of taking up your time only to get the size and style number of shoes they plan on ordering online. I'm a consumer too, so I should understand. It still upsets me tremendously, though, when good solid businesses go under. I wish things were headed in another direction.

Re: Black Dress for Mother of the Bride??
personally, i have never understood all the 'rules' that go along with outfits - color coordinating moms, and *gasp* someone wearing black to a wedding! (My FSIL got married last year and my FMIL is STILL talking about how 'innapropriate' it was for the MOG to have worn black!)
If she feels good in it, that is what matters!!!
Go for it moms of the world - wear black!

I hear you. it is very sad for a business to go under. Out of curiosity, I am a SHOE LOVER and this is probably one of the only items I dont purchase online and bags. I need to see them and try them on in person and if it fits I buy it RIGHT AWAY!
What store do you own where is located? What type of shoes do you sell.
