Re: Black Tie
we had black tie optional - I was surprised and impressed with how many guys showed up in tuxes!edited to say:
My dad and husband bought their tuxes and that started this trend where all my uncles and cousins went out and bought tuxes too (not that they had to, but they wanted to).
We got such good deals on the tuxedos, it paid to buy them over renting - and these were quality tuxedos! Funny how we'll spend thousands (or at least hundreds) on a dress, and the groom often wears used clothes!

Re: Black Tie
Just a quick opinion: Many guests do not own tuxedos, which mean they have to pay to rent them. Just consider that before you require guests to pay an extra $100+ to attend your wedding. Editted to say: You may have guests decline because the a) cannot afford to give you a gift and rent a tux b) they are afraid that if they don't rent the tux they will look under-dressed.You can still have a very formal elegant affair without requiring your guests to dress in black-tie.

Re: Black Tie
I agree with Michelle, which is why we had it as an option rather than a requirement.

Re: Black Tie
Black tie also means Black suit with a dark tie also... but it also depends..Saturday night is black tie most of the time but if you did it on a saturday afternoon you won't see that many...I had a black ie on a Thursday night....

Re: Black Tie
It is my understanding that Black Tie does not mean a dark suit is acceptable...it means tux only.

Re: Black Tie
and even if it does (which I don't agree with), I think 99% of people would interpret it as tux required.

Re: Black Tie
I wanted Black Tie but my family thought I was being snobbish, they felt some people would not come if they had to rent a tux. I understand that attending a wedding can be expensive so I think that I will put Black Tie Optional on my invites. I just don't want people showing up in summer dresses and sandals. I envision gowns and tuxes or at least nice suits!

Re: Black Tie
I went to a Black Tie wedding this past summer and everybody at the wedding was complaining about wearing a tux and what they paid just to be at the wedding.

Re: Black Tie
EvanEdan I agree with you 100%. I have gone to a couple weddings where the guests wore sundresses, business suits (women). It just wasn't appropriate. If you make it optional they either will or they won't. It just lets the guests know this is a formal affair, not a sweet 16.

Re: Black Tie
One more thing to add: If you are having a black tie affair to prevent people from wearing 'casual' wear to your wedding- those same people will never wear black tie. Black tie is more than just clothes. You need to have a super formal affair, in the evening. You should NEVER have a black tie afternoon affair.Welcome New Vendors
