Ok this saturday, we have a wedding to attend. Now the invite says black tie, i have to find the invite though to see if it just says black tie or black tie preferred.
I have a new dress Ive never worn and its beautiful and dressy, its up to the bottom of the knees though, so should i wear it or no?
First of all theres no sit down dinner so i didnt think it would be black tie but it is. Dh's suits were all in his luggage that he lost so he had to buy a new black one this past weekend, although he has a brown pinstripe one he wore to an e-party this past friday and is dressy and couldve worn it but no. I have long dresses but they're all dresses ive worn in the past, and one of them wore a couple of times so dont want to.
I dont care if i dont wear a gown, as long as im not the only one not in a gown. Do you think others will? i really dont know what to do.
I bought 2 new dresses last week, i couldnt decide which one for e-party, i put them on my bloomies card and asked the lady if i can return whichever one i dont wear but i dont want to return the other one now but if I HAVE to wear a long gown i can return it and buy a long gown if i really have to.
Girls who did or are doing black tie, do you expect all the ladies to come in long gowns or are you ok with cocktail dresses too? its not too short either it covers the knees
ETA: there is no sit down dinner so only reason i am asking and questioning.

Re: Black tie
I would say wear the knee length dress you are talking about. I think a fancy cocktail dress would be appropriate to wear to a black tie function.
And you said it's not a sit down dinner either so I think you will be fine. I'm sure there will be plenty of people wearing cocktail/knee length dresses.

Re: Black tie
I am doing black tie, and a coctail length dress is fine as long as it is formal and doesn't look like a sundress, or . Black tie IMO is more for the men to wear a tux or black suit * black suit is fine, so they don't wear khaki's and a button down to a wedding formal wedding ( which i have seen , not a good look for a sat night wedding IMO )
so your fine !

Re: Black tie
I just went to a black tie wedding at Tavern on the Green. I wore a knee length black BCBG dress and FH wore a tux. Every single woman there was in a knee length gown. So I say go for the shorter dress!

Re: Black tie
The only black tie wedding I went to I was in the wedding party, but from what I remember most of the women wore long floor length gowns.

I do not think you need to wear a long gown, though certainly a long gown would be fine too. A formal enough cocktail dress should work. Also you can dress it up with your hair and accessories. If the invite says black tie though obviously DH has to be in a tux. I didn't realize he never got his luggage back

Re: Black tie
i think the knee length would be fine but you could always call the bride and ask her (if thats an option)
my first black tie i had no idea so i just asked her and she wanted full length dresses, so thats what i did, but there were a ton of ladies there in knee length dresses and some pants suits 2

Re: Black tie
I think the dress you described will be fine. I dont think anyone actually expects people to go out and buy a ballgown just for their wedding. LOL. Besides, as a girl, you can totally dress it up more by doing your hair fancy and wearing fancy shoes.

Re: Black tie
I am looking online and most of the websites are saying 'Men should wear a dinner jacket with a black bow tie and women should wear a long floor length evening dress or gown to a black tie party. ' Hope that helps...

see thats what im afraid of, when women see black tie they feel they HAVE to wear a long gown.
Now this isnt even a sit down dinner its a cocktail reception so i was surprised it was black tie bc of that, bc black tie means there will be a sit down dinner

i just wonder if others will wear shorter dresses...black tie does mean guys in tuxes and women in long gowns but i wonder if the bride herself is expecting it but probably bc why else put it in the invitation ya know.
Yeah he never got it back so now he had to buy one to wear for the wedding, and then for me to buy a gown also to wear just for the wedding, i kinda dont want to ya know.
Plus i feel that if there is no sit down dinner then it really shouldnt be but what can you do
i was going to get a long gown but DH is the one who said just to wear the knee length one

Re: Black tie
I think it's clutch for you to know if it's black tie optional or just black tie. My wedding is black tie optional. I don't expect all the women to wear gowns (though I am hopeful for some to do so), but I do expect the men in dark suits at the minimum.

Re: Black tie
PLEASE DONT QUOTE THIS, i will delete this post only soon
Heres the thing, i know how you have to dress for a black tie, now the problem is that i feel if its a black tie event then it has to be a sit down dinner, i dont see why ask for a black tie dress code if we wont even be served dinner. On top of not getting served dinner, DH and I have to go out and spend money to buy a gown and a suit, and thats on top of money we will give as a gift but more importantly, in order for it to be a black tie event there has to be a sit down dinner
I looked up the site of the reception so i know what the menu will be, its cocktail reception...there will be 5 or 8 passed hors dourves and 1 station
