Also, how strange is it not to have any dinner?! No food except cocktails? Is there dancing?

Re: Black tie
where is it ? i think if it isn't a formal , sit down dinner then it is fine. I know I don't care because its the men i was worried about but if you are the type to feel uncomfortable if u are the only one in a cocktail dress ( which i doubt you would be if its not a sit down dinner) then wear it, but if your like me and you really don't care as long as you look good and formal , then go for it !

there is food, its kind of like a small cocktail hour...depending on which option they went with its either 5 or 8 hors dourves and 1 station. Then the rest of the night i guess it is all dancing. I just need to get out of my head that ok theres no sit down dinner so shouldnt be black tie, and just go with the couples wishes for a black tie event regardless. See normally if i got an invite that said black tie, then i would go out and buy a long gown without asking or thinking about it, but all i think is that no its really not so thats why im asking lol

I don't see why it has to be blacktie if it;s only a cocktail reception. That is very odd. I would just wear what you have. I think that would be fine. Usally black tie is a formal sit down dinner.

I think the dress you described will be fine. I dont think anyone actually expects people to go out and buy a ballgown just for their wedding. LOL. Besides, as a girl, you can totally dress it up more by doing your hair fancy and wearing fancy shoes.
im sure some people expect it and thats what im afraid of
well cant do much with my hair since its up to my chin now but the dress itself is very dressy and i think ill wear the blue shoes i wore for my wedding with the dress and then wear jewerly too
you could totally dress up your hair with an embellished hair comb or bobby pin or something like that. Or if you have some fancy jewlery that should do the trick. I guess your right- some people might expect people to go out and buy ball gowns. LOL- but Im sure what you have in mind is perfectly acceptable.

Re: Black tie
I think its odd to have black tie and no sit down dinner. Is it an open bar? Unless its like for a charity event and its a cocktail party they should def have dinner or at least more stations. I think its hard to expect all your guests to be able to afford a ball gown and tux rental. That can cost a lot of money! therefore i think (hopefully) most people doing a black tie wedding see a nice knee length dress as appropriate along with a dark suite. I feel like if you have a very big wedding it would be impossible that everyone would actually wear a tux and ballgown. If I were you, I wouldnt stress it so much and would just dress up the knee length dress.

Re: Black tie
Do you have any dresses that are calf length, that would be fined for a black tie affair.

thats what i was saying...i said well thats not black tie then so the only reason i questioned whether or not i HAVE to wear a long gown. Otherwise i wouldve gotten a long gown and thats it

I have been to a few black tie affairs, and there were people who wore short dresses as well as long dresses. The fact that you said it is not a sit-down dinner makes me want to say for you to wear the knee length dress, i think that is perfecty fine

there is open bar from what i know. But yes i agree, in order for an event to be black tie there has to be a sit down dinner.
It also doesnt help that we have so many events to shell out money for right now...We just had an e-party this past friday and i had a shower this past sunday...We have this wedding coming up this weekend, then another shower coming up. 3 more weddings lol so now its like ok spend even more money to buy a dress when i have a dress i can wear, which is why im questioning myself whether i should get a long gown or not. In just 1 week we've had 3 events to spend money on. Plus im a bm in an upcoming wedding so also have money to give for the bp and everything else. Now i dont mind all these things at all, giving a gift and all that is expected but this 1 situation i feel like why should i have to lol, maybe its wrong for me to feel like that

Re: Black tie
How odd?! I say go with the knee length dress. I'm sure other women will be there in the same type of outfit. Perhaps the bride put it on the invite to ensure certain male/female family members dress appropriately?

I think that is the best route. As long as there are others dressed like you, you should be fine. I'm sure you won't be the only one either, especially if there is no formal sit down dinner.
