Black Tie

Black Tie

So friends of FH and I are getting married at the end of June and it's Black Tie. I know that for men this means they must wear a tux but I really think it's silly for FH to spend over 100 bucks to rent a tux when he needs a new black suit and he could buy one and it would be something he would always have. Do you girls think it would be ok if he work a black nice suit with a bow tie instead of renting a tux??

On a side note- i think black tie is really nice but in our friends' wedding case they are med students and half of the people coming are not only from OOT (around 50) but are students that have no $ to be renting tuxes. I just think it was bad thinking on their part to require this. I am being silly? i know they have every right to do what they want for the wedding...

a black suit is fine. our wedding is black tie, but i know there will be several people there in suits. as long as it's a dark color, preferably black, he'll be fine.

I am willing to bet that there will be others who do not wear tuxes as well. Go for the black suit and bow tie. If you really want him to wear one, go to K&G and buy one. They are cheap and he can use it again. That is what my brother did for a wedding and now he uses it time and time again and does not have to rent a tux every time.

He needs a new black suit? Is it for a particular purpose, because black is one of the least versatile suits a guy can wear, and is generally frowned upon.

Why doesn't he try Joseph A. Bank? They have tuxes on sale right now and he can get a peak lapel jacket and pants for $300 for a perfectly serviceable tux. I mean, for that price he will have a tux for a long time.

Otherwise, I'd personally just wear a charcoal suit. IMO, the worst option here is a black suit.

if he doesnt want ot rent a tux (there is no need to really) he can wear a dark suit. Also no need to force him to wear a bowtie unless he wants to. Just make sure his tie is dark, suit is dark and shirt is white and he is fine.

My wedding will be black tie and if someone showed up dressed as i decribed I'd be perfectly happy. I do not expect people to rent tuxes if they do not already own one.

All the weddings I've ever been to have been black tie...and my fiance never wears a tux...just a black suit. The only people in a tux are the people who are the immediate family and groomsmen. I think people can do whatever they want...if it suits their venue and style. I don't think its inconsiderate to want a formal wedding....guys dont have to go out renting tuxes...just wear a dark suit and look formal.

I have to say I disagree...

Honestly, I have to say I'm surprised at a lot of the responses on here. If a wedding is Black Tie Optional, or even Black Tie Preferred, then I agree 100% that a dark suit is more than adequate.

However, if the hosts have specified Black Tie, that conveys a very specific request by the hosts. Proper etiquette says that guests should abide by the hosts wishes unless they (a) know that the hosts will find a dark suit acceptable or (b) truthfully cannot afford to comply with the dress code.

One can rent a perfectly fine tuxedo for $100, and you can get a very serviceable tuxedo from Joseph A Bank for about $300 on sale. In fact, just by looking at a few discount retailers, you can get a functional tux for $160:

Now truthfully, if you wear the tux even 4 or 5 times, it's probably a good value.

It is a generally accepted principle of men's style that a black suit is not really acceptable for most situations, save a funeral. I'm not sure why one would purchase a black suit when one could purchase a nice navy or charcoal suit that would get MUCH more use and could be used for everything from business to church to evening events.

In sum, (a) it is very poor etiquette to just do 'whatever you want' when the hosts have expressed a dress code, (b) you can purchase a serviceable tuxedo for $150-300, or rent one for about $80-100, and (c) a navy or charcoal suit is a much better value and much more acceptable than a black suit.

Black Tie is also for the women so they know how to dress for the event as well.

A black suit would be just fine. He could def get away with that.

It's really just a notating that lets you know it's a fancy event so dress accordingly. Not so much that he HAS to wear a tux.

I went to a black tie event for the cancer society..... and that was probably the ONLY event where EVERYONE wore a tux. Usually for weddings they put black tie optional and even with Black Tie, a lot of guests show up in black suits. And women wear gowns or the equivelant of a fancy gown.

I totally disagree. I like black suits on guys and if the whole room is wearing black tux's then a suit in another color would stand out.

navy = no good IMO. You want to match your girl... and navy is sometimes a tricky color to match.
I still stand by the black suit option. Sorry.
'generally accepted principle of men's style'.... what men? the man next to me at work is wearing a black suit today... I just asked him what he would wear in this situation... he said a black suit. not navy or charcoal or any other color. Actually I think one would get MORE use out of a versitile black suit than a suit in another color.

I'm actually so surprised by your comment. I always thought black suits looked very nice on guys and I never thought it was unacceptable in certain situations other than a funeral.

I agree with the above poster that you want to match your guy when getting dressed up and having a black suit gives you that option by allowing you to have a similar/matching tie or shirt color whereas a navy suit might clash.
