...what you might wear to a wedding that's Black Tie optional. Nothing I have laying around fits the bill. What can I buy for a wedding that's black tie optional that has a chance of being worn again at another event? TIA!

Black tie optional, traditionally means that you would wear a floor length gown. We are having a black tie wedding. We wrote that on the invitation to convey that the event is very formal.
ETA: I dont have pics right now, but anything floor length that is formal would work.

if it is optional, any black cocktail dress will due, just not something you would wear to work or a work affair. To be black tie I would wear a black gown. Anything from Lord & Taylor, even estelles..
We're going to a wedding this weekend that is not black tie but we are all wearing black gowns because we have them. YOu can always wear them again.

Just got invited to a wedding that is 'black tie optional' as well. Does that mean that my FH need to wear a tux?? or can he wear a nice black suit?

nice black suit for optional is ok , women can wear cocktail or floor as long as it is formal looking, not like you are going to a bbq

I had a black tie optional wedding and I was Ok with guests coming in a suit or tux. It is really just to convey that this is a formal affair and men should wear a suit jacket and women should not wear sun dresses but cocktail dresses or floor lenght gowns.

Should I be thinking about red carpet dresses (the styles / not designers)
its black tie optional not black tie so you dont have to wear a floor length gown. But of course definitely dress up, a nice very dressy cocktail dress will be fine. I went to a black tie optional wedding recently and i was going to wear a long gown but thank god i didnt bc almost NOBODY did lol. If it was black tie or even black tie preferred then thats when you would have to wear a floor length gown
for guys they can wear a nice black suit.

that's an awesome dress! That's makes me feel soooo much better. I was really feeling like I was gonna look goofy in a floor length gown, which I don't think I've ever worn in my life (except to try on wedding gowns! ) But I can definitely spring for a nice dress!

oohh noo!! I don't want to be the only one with the short / long dress....
The invitation does say 'optional' so I guess short is fine. Thanks so much for the info and for the pic. I love your dress & shoes!!!!

I don't have a picture but I bought a very simple but elegant black satin floor length nicole miller gown for times where I might have to go to a black tie affair. I've worn it a few times and felt perfectly dressed for the occasion

do you know anyone else that is attending the wedding? it was dh's friend that got married so i asked the wives/fiancee's and gf's of his friends that were attending and they all said they were going to wear knee length dresses. Once i heard they were all not going to wear a floor length dress, it made it easier for me. Like i said, thank god i didnt wear a long gown bc nobody else did. I think 1 girl did and it wasnt a dressy floor length gown, it was more of a summer bohemian type dress, and i thought my dress looked more dressy
KYBRIDE09: i would also ask others that might be attending what theyre wearing...but if its optional again it is not required to wear long. They just want to make sure that ppl do dress up so trying to get the message out

If you don't want to wear a long dress, tea length might be a good way to go! I don't think you are expected to def wear long. Girls can dress things up more than a man. i think the black tie thing is usually more of a guidence saying it is a more formal affair.
