Do you think the place that you choose should dictate whether or not you have a black tie wedding?
A friend of mine just got invited to a wedding that states black tie. She is complaining that she has nothig to wear.I know the place she is having it (Not in LI) and IMO is not formal enough for black tie.
Does that matter or is it totally up to the couple and their tastes?

Re: Black Tie wedding
it depends what is the plac elike? if it's like a barn and they put BT, then that is BS.. but I think that usually the couple dictates that.

Re: Black Tie wedding
I think it's up to the couple to decide - not letting the place dictate it. For women, a BT affair is no biggie - they can wear anything from tea-length to floor length (white tie requires them to wear a ball gown)...it's the men that have to go out and spend money on renting a tux.

Re: Black Tie wedding
I really don't think the place makes a request either way. It's usually the couple. I put Black Tie optional on mine...... only so some family members would KNOW it's not the back yard type of event! (Believe me, it was necessary!)

Re: Black Tie wedding
I was just at a wedding where the couple put 'semi-formal attire' on the invite. You should have seen the outfits on many of these people! Shorts, tank tops, housedresses! It was unbelievable! I wore a linen pantsuit with cropped pants and Matt wore a suit. We were overdressed by far!

Re: Black Tie wedding
then do it Dani!!
I got soo many phone calls from people excited to sport their best outfits and from those whose husbands have tuxes that they own and care rarely ever wear...

Re: Black Tie wedding
HOW can you show up to a wedding in JEANS? that is SOOO tacky - even casual wedding dictate nicer dress than jeans! Usually at least a sundress and guys in blazers - but hey I think some people were raised in barns so maybe that matters

Re: Black Tie wedding
Jenn, the two people that showed up in jeans are cousins that usually don't ever show up, but respond yes anyway...I guess we were lucky they even showed!
They wore black blazers with blue jeans and cowboy boots.
