Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but what's the deal with having to get a blood test before you get married? Does anyone know about this? From what I understand, when you want to start having children you should both get blood tests for genetic testing, right? To make sure you don't both have a gene for a certain disease or problem I thought. What is my mom talking about??? She's telling me we have to do this before our marriage license even (which I KNOW isn't true)! Help!!

Re: Blood Test before Getting Married?
You used to be required to get this done before getting your marriage license, I think the purpose was to see if either partner had HIV or something. This is no longer required.

Re: Blood Test before Getting Married?
Back in the day, NYS required couples to have blood tests before they married. They tested for syphillis (believe it or not).
It is no longer a requirement. No blood test is necessary, so don't worry about it.

Thanks!!! 'Back in the day' being the key words!! This is what I told my mom, that they don't do this anymore! Thank you so much everyone, for my stupid question.

Girl they give you tons of needles when you are pregnant....I hated that part of my pregnancy... So if you wanna have a baby ...get ready to say hello to the needle....I hate them too
I heard about this tooo but It was an old thing that they don't require anymore for marriage

Re: Blood Test before Getting Married?
Genetic testing is not required for a marriage license- It is actually pretty costly but in some cases a good idea depending on you background.

Re: Blood Test before Getting Married?
This was what they used to do for venereal disease testing.
Nuts... most people wouldn't get married now after the stuff I've read about Long Island and STDs
STDs pose a serious health threat to the residents of Nassau and Suffolk counties, particularly our youth. According to the Suffolk County Department of Health, there was an increase of 24% of Chlamydia cases between 2002 and 2003, with the great majority of infections (73%) in the 15-29 year old age group. Of the 470 cases of Gonorrhea reported in Suffolk County in 2003 (rate of 32.2 per 100,000), 73% was in the 20-29 year old age group and 25% was in the 15-19 year old age group . The incident rate of Syphilis in Suffolk County is .71 cases per 100,000, higher than the New York State average (Suffolk County Community Health Assessment 2005-10). In 2007, the Nassau County Department of Health reported 2,376 cases of Chlamydia, 385 cases of Gonorrhea and 161 cases of Syphilis. Due to the recent resurgence in early syphilis, the Nassau County Department of Health has made syphilis management a priority (Nassau County Department of Health).

Re: Blood Test before Getting Married?
This may sound horrible...
I want to get genetic testing done b/c there are a few diseases that run in my family that are just such a strain on the parents. I personally don't think I could deal with a child in a wheelchair that required 24/7 supervision and night wake ups for medical reasons and one of my cousins passed away at 12...
Anyway, if FH and I are both positive for the gene, we may not have kids and that is heartbreaking for me. Maybe your mom wants you to get testing so you can talk about these things before the wedding. It might be bad enough to cause divorces in some cases and maybe she wants it all out there before you get married.
FH and I have talked about this a lot and we're still not sure what we would do. I would be devastated if I couldn't carry a child. He is anti-adoption (for us) and against anyone else carrying a baby...it would be very stressful on our marriage if it came to this in a few years. We're planning on getting tested before the marriage. I'm sure we'll be able to get through it if the tests are bad, but it will be something we're prepared to talk about, etc.
