BM dress too expensive? (I need opinions, BM issue!)
Original post by ILoveHim
Okay, so I asked my brother's girlfriend to be a bridesmaid and she accepted. I figured it would be a nice gesture, especially since my brother will be a groomsman. So after months of searching, I chose my favorite dress. It originally costed $350 but I am able to get it for $200. My other four bridesmaids are alright with this price. But she's not, she told me that it's a bit expensive for her and she suggested some other dresses that are cheaper and look nice too (but not just as nice). So I had all of the other bridesmaids vote for their favorite out of those dresses and the original, and most of them still chose the original dress.
I asked my brother to help her pay for her dress and he refuses
Honest opinions please?? Am I being unreasonable? This was by far my favorite dress for the BMs and I'm not going to change it because of her (and my brother's stubborness)

Helll my girls paid more then 200 for their dresses. If that is what you want then do it~ask what she feels is exceptable and maybe offer to pay the difference~or negotiate around at other salons.

I would keep the dress you would like $200.00 is not being unreasonable at all ~ that is the going price ~ I was lucky to have my girls wear a $145.00 dress but that is not why it was chosen... That was nice that you found it a lot cheaper... I was just in my friend Jenn's wedding and her BM dress was $189.00 + alterations and tax etc... Good Luck!

I don't think $200 is too much for a dress. Most people know what they are getting into when they are in a bridal party and that includes covering many costs. She shouldn't be taking polls or asking around.

I think it's a tough situation. As the bride I know you find a dress you love and you want everyone to love it too....but in reality as a BM, most likely they don't love it enough to wear it again and any amount is a lot of money for these dresses. Would you buy a $200 dress to wear to a New Years party? I know I wouldn't. I don't think you can be mad at this BM for saying her opinion....personally for a wedding I was in the bride was looking at a dress that was $300 and i told her I thought it was too expensive....if she chose it after i made my thoughts clear then that was her choice. You also have to consider it's not just $200...it's $200+ everything else people have to get to be in your wedding. Every choice I have made in my wedding was based on how i would want another bride to treat me in their wedding party. Just consider that when making your decisions....

Honestly, the only thing maybe you could do is over to pay the difference between the dresses she likes and the dress you like. And that would literally be going above and beyond on your part!
Changing it is NOT an option. This is your wedding. She is not married yet so she doesn't realize what it is like to be a bride. I picked a $250 dress that I was about to get for $210 + tax with a discount. One of my girls complained and I offered to pay for half because she legitimately has no money.
If she doesn't like it, she'll drop out of the bridal party, which might not be such a bad thing becuase if she is going to give you a hard time with this, she'lll probably give you a hard time with other things int he future (bachelorette party, bridal shower, etc.)
I completely agree with this advice. Offer to help her pay for it.

Just playing devils advocate...but if you offer to help pay for 1 will the other bridesmaids be resentful that they have to pay in full?

I agree with everyone here. I think you can say very nicely that you're sorry she's not happy but it's the choice you and the other BMs have made. Tell her that you'll understand if she decides not to participate (if you don't care either way) OR if you really want her in the wedding, tell her you will pay a little bit of the cost.

ahh there is always a rebel in the group hey you brought the price down to 200 what more does she want I understand some people have finanical issues but she accepted to be your bridesmaid and she should work something out to pay for the dress if everyone else voted for it there should not be an issue

I don't think it's unreasonable. My bm dresses are $200 as well. Even my bm on unemployment wasn't upset about it because she knows that it means a lot to me and as long as it looks good on her, she's ok with it. I think if she knows how much it means, she should be reasonable about the price.

Thats doesnt seem unreasonable at all. $300 maybe but I thought $200 was about average.

These days you can't really get anything under $200!!! You are the Bride- if thats what you want then GET it!!! My BM dresses were almost $300 and I had one BM complain (figures she's the one with the most money- hubby is in the SCPD and shes a physical therapist)! I stcuk with it and in the end she apologized and said how happy she was that I wnet with it!!
I disagree. I got my BM dresses for 135.00 (RK Bridal)
To the OP, I think 200 is too much for a BM dress, but that's JUST ME...
I tried to keep mine around 150.00 which is usually how much I spent on the past weddings I was in... You have to also remember they will most probably be paying for alterations as well.
HOWEVER... it is YOUR wedding and if you like the BM dresses, then it is up to the BM's whether or not they can swing it. I'm sure she has plenty of time to come up with the $$..
Is she & your brother that serious? I would be weary about putting any significant other (other than my SIL) in my bridal party.
again-- just me.

i honestly don't think 200 is a lot to spend at all. if she can't afford the dress, she should not agree to be a bm
but that's just my 2 cents

I think you getting it down to that price is great. See if she can work out some kind of payment plan with the dress store or have your brother lend her the money instead of outright paying for it.
Oh and if she's being this way now, she is going to be a headache with the other girls on the price of things such as your shower and b-party.
I agree 100 percent. Maybe pay the $50 difference between the dresses, but IMHO, I think she is out of line complaining about the price or asking you to change it. She doesn't get that its not about her.

If its the dress you want then go for it and if she can't afford it or find a way to pay for it then she might have to drop out, but don't go changing your idea for her, especially because you had a vote with the rest of your BM and they still picked your dress. Sorry to be so blunt JMO HTH

Re: BM dress too expensive? (I need opinions, BM issue!)
I think $200 is a lot to spend on a dress. It is, unfortunately, fairly average now, but I still think it's way too much. My girls dresses were beautiful and I got them for $110. It can be done. Remember, after taxes, alterations, shoes, underwear, etc, that $200 dress becomes $300+ And if she's a plus size girl, it's a lot more.
But if it's the dress you love $200 isn't unrealistic. I'm a BM next year and that's about the price of my gown. I was choking as I made the deposit, but I can swing it so I'll do it for my friend. If she can't then you should let her opt out of being in BP without any hard feelings.

$200 is completely reasonable, I'm surprised you found something for such a great deal as it is! Stick with your choice - it is your wedding!

I'll actually be in a wedding three months before mine and I was asked to pay $275 and I accepted..I know everyone isn't willing to pay that much but I figured I'd do it to make that person happy on her day...

He's planning on proposing soon...but it just seems wierd to me that he's that serious about her, yet he can't even help her out with the dress to do both me and her a favor?? I'm not even mad at her, I can understand if she's having trouble affording it, i'm just so annoyed with him...and trust me, he can definitely afford it...but he's just being stubborn because of the 'principle'
