i don't want to sound ungrateful or demanding of my guests but...
i was fined by my bank because one of the checks we received BOUNCED. my bank apparently did not retain any information other than the amount. they said the person who wrote the check will also be fined by their bank for overdrafting.
it's been weeks and no one has fessed up!!!
has this happened to anyone else?

Re: bounced checks
This is so weird b/c I was wondering what the etiquette was if a guest bounced a check. My feeling is that you suck it up and say nothing. I would think that the guest would call and send another check or something - and apologize.
Otherwise, there isn't much you can do.
That really stinks, though.
ET delete a misstatement.
sorry this happened!

Re: bounced checks
This happened to me with two checks. My bank sent me the checks back and I confronted one of them. He was so embarrased, but realized that it was a bank problem - they didn't link all his accounts. He ended up giving me and extra $20 bucks to cover the fee. The other person left me a message saying that her check bounced - again very embarrased - and offered to send me the fee charge which I declined. I redeposited both checks with no problems. If you find out who's check it is, don't be afraid to confront them. They probably don't even know it happened and will be happy to resolve the issue.
Good luck.

Re: bounced checks
one of our guests had that but they immediately delivered the cash to my house. I wasn't charged a fee though (go Washington Mutal!!). They were very nice about it

Re: bounced checks
wait, i don't understand how the bank can not have the information as to WHICH check it was that was bounced??? i find that to be very odd. i have never ever heard of this. i think you need to speak with someone higher up at the bank--because that's a load of bull that they can't tell you which check it was. how do they know it wasn't an error of the other person's bank? you should be able to find out the check and then the other party should verify the information and that it wasn't some glitch. like i said, i think it's shady the bank is not telling you which check bounced.
as for the etiquette, if you find out who did it, i would certainly tell them in a polite manner that you incurred fees and let them know about it!

Re: bounced checks
I would just suck up the loss. The person who wrote the bounced check is probably in a poor financial situation, hence the bounced check.

Re: bounced checks
That did happen to us. OUr friend bounced a check. He got in touch with us after a few days and apologized profusely. He said he switched bank accounts and wrote the check under the wrong bank. He even gave us the money the bank charged us for the bounce. I don't understand though because his name and a copy of the bounced check was sent to us.

Re: bounced checks
two days after the wedding, we deposited around 30 checks using multiple deposit slips. a few days later i got hit with the fine. i called Citibank and they told me they only retain the amount. i flipped out on them and asked to speak with a supervisor. she said that is standard procedure. i told her, what if your bank decides that half the checks bounce and i get fined for 15 checks but i have no idea who wrote the checks, how do i know you're not lying. she said to me: if they are wedding presents, wouldn't your friends and family tell you their check bounced?
i'm dying to know-- who wrote us a bad check???
ps. i am posting under a new name bc i was afraid to get comments like i shouldn't expect gifts in the first place blah blah.

I have an account with Citibank and what they told you is complete rubbish.
Whether you receive 'copies' or 'scans' of your checks, they will have the names on them, and you will know who's checks bounced.
Call them again asking for the check number(s) of the checks that bounced and the issuer name and their bank.

Re: bounced checks
I used to work at a bank and it was my understanding that you have the opportunity to re-deposit a bounced check. They must return the check to you since it is good for 'another try' if you will. The girl on the phone may not have the information for you but someone does and that check must be returned.
