Can you have a drink (alcohol) when you are breastfeeding? I dont mean going out and get smashed... just meaning the occasional drink every now and then. Thanks!

You can have a couple of drinks. I just stopped BF and I had drinks. I never got drunk though. At first it took me months before I would even have a sip of alcohol. I was a new mommy, and didn't feel right. But after a while I had some beer and everything was fine! It never affected the baby.

I thought I read that its OK to have an occasional glass of wine or beer, but that liquor was not appropriate.

You shoudl stop drinking at least 1 hr before breastfeeding. Wine has a higher alcohol content than beer, so keep in mind that 2 glasses of wine is more than 2 beers.

Re: Breastfeeding and Drinking
I think you should have a drink or two once in a while and enjoy yourself. You went through 9 months of pregnancy abstaining from everything but tylenol, and maybe even that. You should not feel guilty if you want to relax and have a drink once in a while. A very small amount of alcohol metabolites come through in the breast milk. I asked my doctor how long I should dump my milk for if I have a drink or two, and he said, why in the world would you dump your milk? There is no research to show it is harmful in small amounts and there is no reason not to breastfeed or pump. I don't think that it is in any way unsafe for your child if it is only on occassion and in a small amount. If in doubt, ask your ob and get his advice.

Some beers are in fact suppose to help increase your supply (Guiness), this is a medical fact

I think that beer in general boosts milk production, i heard it's the 'hops' - I think Guinness has more hops, that's why they mention that one in particular.

Re: Breastfeeding and Drinking
In my breastfeeding class the lactation consultant told us that an occasional glass of beer or wine is ok. She said that 2 glasses a couple of times a week is ok. The biggest effect it will have on the baby is it will make the baby tired.
It's really a personal choice. The fact is some alcohol will get into your milk, different studies and different people vary on how much gets to the baby. I have had a couple of drinks a couple of times and each time after I decided to pump and dump. I don't know if it's necessary but that makes me feel better about it.

I totally think you can have an occasional drink while breastfeeding. There is nothing wrong with it! Just stick to wine or beer and don't go overboard (which I'm sure you know).
