Bridal Parties and Wedding Gifts (w/poll)?

Original post by ChrissynRicky

Disclaimer: I am simply asking a question, I'm not looking for 'IMO it's tacky not to' etc....Thanks in advance.

If you have ever been in a bridal party - did you not give a gift to the bride and groom?

Are the attendants supposed to give a gift or are they not expected to?

Yes-I have been in several bridal parties & always gave a rather large check in my envelope.

Same here, because if you are in the BP then that ususally means that this is someone that is close to you. You know what I mean?

Re: Bridal Parties and Wedding Gifts (w/poll)?

I've been in several weddings and I've done a few different things:

The first time I was in a wedding was when I was in college. I was MOH for a girlfriend, we were really young and I had only been to one other wedding so I knew nothing about about weddings at all (no one else I knew had been in a wedding or was a MOH so I had no one to ask or seek guidance). It was also the first wedding I went to as an adult (though really, I was just a kid). In this case, I didn't have much cash so bought (via credit card) a $200 platter from their registry and had it sent a couple days before the wedding as their gift.

Another time I was in a BP, my girlfriend said since I was getting married soon we should just not give each other anything because we will just cancel each other out. I gave a check anyway and more than I normally would as a regular gift.

The other times, I gave a gift and usually more than I normally would have.

With our wedding, I think there are a couple people in the BP who we will probably not get a gift from.

MOST DEFINITELY GIVE A GIFT! I've never even heard of a bridal party attendant not give one.

Our best man and one of our GMs didn't give us anything. It happens!

Ditto for us too!!

I think you should give if you can...but if your'e younger than 18 (like a Jr. BM or GM) then no gift. In general, I feel that gifts are so optional and depends on the person's economic standing and 'etiquette knowledge'...most of our guests and BP did not give gifts. We were absolutely OK with this.

I try to give more if possible. Definitely always a gift ($$$)

I give a little less than usual. I've been a bridesmaid 4 times and I've always spent at least $300 in total so I figure I don't have to give as much.

Same here...I've always put more than what I would have put if I was just a guest...for you to have been put in the bridal party means that you have a close relationship with the bride and groom - which in my opinion means you go a little more as far as gifts goes for both the wedding and the bridal shower

I marked did give a gift... but I was 17, 18 and 22 for my sibling's weddings so I gave what I can back then (which probably was a lot because I always worked three jobs)! And I would always do things like photo albums filled with developed pics after too!

But... I would not expect anything from my party... anything would be unexpected and much appreciated!

I was in my sisters. I gave a gift. Even if it were a friend, I think you should give a gift.

I have always given a gift. However, I have heard that some BM, do not give a gift if they, for example, paid for the shower, bachelorette party , etc...

BM defintiely spend alot of money to be in the wedding.

To date, I've only been in one wedding. I gave a generous gift on top of having to fly to the wedding and pay for accomodations and to rent a car. I will be the MOH in my sister's wedding in July and a BM in my SIL's wedding in September. I will most definitely give a generous gift, more than I would for a regular wedding.

I had 3 attendants.

1 gave us a check
1 didn't give us a gift/check
1 paid for the wine at the wedding (huge gift).

My personal opinion -- it is OK for a BM, especially one who has been under a lot of financial stress, to send a smaller gift. After the dress, shoes, showers, travel/hotel it is a lot to spend on a wedding. I do think you should give something -- even if it is $25 on towels.

YES... If I was in a BP, I would definately give more then I would if I was just a guest.

Me too...in the six weddings I've been in I've always given a larger check than when I am just a guest. Although I do know some people have the complete opposite mentality and feel like because they paid so many expenses to be in the wedding, it replaces the gift.
