I want to plan my own shower, even though my sister MOH offered to plan it for me. I am thinking of just having it in my house. I recently took a course in college Hunger in America, which opened my eyes to many things. So I decided that I do not want to register for gifts. I would rather have my guests write a check for $20,50,75 or 100 to Meals on Wheels in NY. How should I tell them about it? Thanks in advance girls.

Re: Bridal Shower Question
I think you have a great idea, and your heart is certainly in the right place. You should be commended for your compassion!
I think you might run into a problem with this.... 1., I think some guests will STILL get you a gift whether you're registered or not. And some might feel funny about being 'asked' to make a donation to charity that they might not be as connected to as you do. I think a 'no gifts, please' policy might work better.... Just my opinion though.
Perhaps you could organize a separate day for all of your buds and family to do some hands-on volunteer work for Meals on Wheels? You could tag team it with some bridal activity.

Re: Bridal Shower Question
i think maybe instead of a wishing well you ask for non perishables to be brought to be donated to the local food shelter...then instead of favors you could make the donation to the food bank...imo you might get a better reponse this way as people are coming to shower you...what if someone doesnt agree with donating to meals on wheels? im not saying that i dont (i think this is awesome but if it isnt someone favorite charity they might feel weird) gl and you are so selfless!!!!!!!!

I think the idea above is FANTASTIC.
Let me say, you and I must have been cut from the same cloth. I proposed this to my family as well....and all h*ll broke loose! I thought FH would have agreed with me (I wanted donations in lieu of gifts to a charity I volunteer for)....but everyone thought this was absurd because people would still want to give gifts.
It's tough because your heart is in the right place but the same is said for your guests. I've come to realize that they are excited about your new life and want to contribute something to help you begin. My shower is planned for late June and over 65 are invited. I am touched and I have to tell you its exciting to have things purchased off your registry. I am going to enjoy it and allow myself to be completely spoiled on this day.
Perhaps you can also do donations with bookmarks or something like that in lieu of shower favors and maybe the same at the wedding.
It's up to you- I think there's a way to balance everything and still achieve your very noble goals! I'd love to know what you end of doing!

This is a GREAT idea! The best of both worlds IMO ... and I think it's something that people would really get behind and still be happy to get you a gift as well.

Re: Bridal Shower Question
Thank you girls for the kind words and advice. There were so many huge sales for the past year that we bough almost everything we wanted. But, I am sure I can still find things to add to the registry The only thing is that most of my relatives are not in US . I will probably just invite 10-15 friends. How many things am I suppose to add to the registry? Where did you guys create one? The only thing comes to my mind is Macy's & Bed Bath and Beyond since I shop there. Thanks.
