I think maybe 3-6 months in advance of your wedding date for them. I just stopped by the bridal salon to check on the status of my gown, I am having my girls order their BM dresses the day I go for my first fitting. My salon suggested to order as soon as possible, since sometimes styles may be discontinued.
BM dresses usually take about 4-6 months to come in once you order them. After that, alterations need to be done, so you usually have one fitting where they pin the dress and everything, and then the second fitting is to make sure the alterations were done correctly. So I would give yourself enough time to work all of that in.
