Btrfylgrl -- our car shopping experience this weekend -- hope your DH isn't like this

Basically what happened was we wanted to get a couple quotes so we can get a really good deal.

The guy showed us a 2003 Camry for $17,770, it had 11,000 miles on it. We have a trade in and he said that he would give us a $1,000 for us. Now our car is a 97 but its in excellent condition, I was expecting at least $2,000-$2,500 for it. So in the middle of giving us the quote, his phone rings and a 'guy' calls in saying that he shopped around and Toyota Five Town gave him the best deal and he is coming in to pick up his car. Then this sales guy says that this guy just got the last 2004 off the lot because they are selling like hot cakes. That sounded a little weird to me that this guy got the 'last'
2004 Camry on the lot?

So anyway, he wanted us to buy the car right then and there, so we go outside to talk and decide that we are going to tell the guy that we are going to sell our car on our own. He doesnt like that answer so he asks us what the problem is and we told him that we didnt like the amount of the trade, so he bounces it up to $1650. So just to get out of there, we tell him that well go home and get our car so we can do the deal. We just wanted out of there at that point because he was getting too
too pushy.

He then leaves us two messages on our answering machine, the first one asking 'Whats the holdup??' and then the second one saying that he'll give us $2,500 for our car. Hello??!! He didnt even see it and NOW all of a sudden he's going to give us $2,500????

The real kicker is my FIL reads the paper and finds the same car at the same dealership on sale for $13,000!!!!!! They were trying to sucker us in for $4,000 more!!

another discrepancy was that on the car, they posted a profile on the car from kelly's blue book. In the profile, it listed the value as about $18,100. Tonight, we did our own web search on the same site and now the value was about $17,000. So, something is not right.

The big problem is, we just want to go to a few dealerships and compare deals, not get pushed into buying anything. This guy was really really pushy. We kept saying that we wanted to think about it and didn't want to trade our car in and wanted to sell to a private party and the guy WOULD NOT LET US LEAVE. We had to tell him that we were interested and that we would go home and get our car so he could check it out and we could finalize the deal, just so we could get out of there. We even filled out a form so they could check our credit. They must be really desperate because the guy left us 2 messages and called a few other times, which we didn't answer because we knew that it was him.

Don...

*Sigh*....it's a sad state of affairs....Car salesmen (most of them) will and are told to lie cheat and steal to get a deal. Fortunately, it's against DH morals...and his dealership is the same way. Most of the guys he works with left a bigger dealer because the new mgmt. asked them to lie cheat and steal to get the deal. They didn't agree with that, so they left. And while they don't put out 100 cars a month...they have happy customers that come back years later because of the way they were treated....which IMO, is priceless.

Yes..they want to keep you there. Once you walk, there goes their deal, and they know it. My husband would rather lose all his commission than lose a customer!

As for your trade in value...it should be somewhere near the book value of it. As for the discrepancy in the pricing...it happens...it brings you into the dealer, doesn't it? If I were you, I'd find a smaller dealership, they tend to be more honest, and tell them your story. Some places are all about the deal, and there are those that care about their customer. Find out the book value of your trade in...and lie yourselves. Tell them that another dealer offered you this amount but didn't have the car you wanted in stock, blah blah blah. It's nothing but a game. Play it well!

If you need anymore advice, FM me and I'll let DH read it and advise!

Want to know how to get the BEST deal on a car? Do the following.

(This all assuming you know the exact model of the car you want... with all the options).

Get the fax and email addresses to all the available dealers within 100mi of your house. Send out a letter to each dealer (start with the FURTHEST AWAY dealers). Send the letter to their sales manager / internet manager.

On the letter... tell them you are in the market for a 2004 Camry and list ALL the options you want. Tell them you would rather deal with FAX/EMAIL ONLY and you are talking to several dealers... and have them send you their BEST price for this exact configuration.

They will get back to you. If they give you a price and you like it... ask them to send you a purchase order. If they don't want to give you a purchase order/invoice and want you to come in to 'talk about it'... dont bother. If they are willing to send you a PO... then they are serious about selling the car.

Start with the furthest dealers first... and use their prices to negotiate a better price with the dealers closer to you.

Trust me... this works. Dealers hate it cause it forces them to give you their best price right away. Don't bother with the trade unless after you get your best price... they give you something reasonable for it. If they don't want to give you a good price... just sell it privately.

I will never just 'walk in' to a dealer to try to negotiate a deal. I will know the price of the car I am going to pay before I even walk in.

Just go into any dealer and look around and figure out what options you want. Just don't get caught into talking price. When you know what options you want exactly... write down the dealer codes for them (you can get these on the web).

Then start the letter process
