Butter---Any bakers out there?

Butter---Any bakers out there?

I loooove butter...But in an effort to be more health-conscious, I'd like to substitute it with something else in recipes. I know nothing quite takes the place of butter, but there has to be something I could use to cut out some of those bad features of butter.

Anyone?

I used to bake with Margarine a lot. The taste is virtually identical. Unfortunately, I'm back on butter because I don't give a damn about my arteries!

are you making cookies or cakes?

Cause they have that fruit pure that comes in a jar, that you can use instead of oil and butter.

do you know what it's called?

is margerine actually better than butter? and if it is, does the consistency of baked goods come out the same? i'm not so much worried about the taste as i am about it actually holding up...

This isnt for butter but you can substitute applesauce for oil when baking. Ive done it with muffins.

no, not really.
Margarine is high in trans fats which are now believed to be as bad or worse than saturated fat.

I don't really think margarine IS any better/healthier than butter. There have been a bunch of studies that link it to non-fatal heart attacks and raising your LDLs, so I stopped using it. It has the same calories, there's a link to cancer, high in trans-fatty acids etc etc.
Personally I feel that butter, although fatty is a better because at least it's natural. My feeling is this: all things in moderation.

When it comes to baking, I say stick with butter, the taste will be better. A lot of the low-fat spread contain a lot of water and can't be used for baking.

The consistency of your baking will be better with real butter, not that it is BAD with margarine, it's just better with real butter. But yes, there is definitely a movement back toward using butter instead of margarine because of the trans fats in margarine.

This is absolutely my feeling too! I never use anything but butter (for spreading) and olive oil (for cooking) and also in moderation, of course...

no. But you find it in the same section as the oil and baking stuff. I want to guess and say 'smarter bake' or 'smart bake'.

The jar is about 6' high, and you can see the brown puree.

yes! i think i can picture it now!

Brummel & Brown is good. I think it's better for you than margarine. Made from yogurt. No trans fat
