Buying house ..before or after wedding

Original post by shoegal68

so me & FH have been house hunting on & off for awhile.. no luck so far. houses AND taxes are still a bit expensive on LI..

we are undecided if we should just wait until after the wedding and just continue to casually still look. Just worried that if we do find something it will be too stressful to plan and pay for the wedding and a new house..

any advice??

Re: Buying house ..before or after wedding

We bought our house first. It's been a piece of cake planning our wedding. We're getting married in November and I just started booking and planning everything a few weeks ago and 90% done. We got all of the vendors and place of reception that we wanted =)

I'm a realtor and also in the process of becoming a vendor on here w/Coach Realtors (Long Island's Largest Independant Realtor).
If you ever have any questions feel free to contact me.

Best Wishes & Good Luck!

We are waiting until our 1 year anniversary. Prices are high, but are expected to drop about 6% (over how long- who knows) but LI was one of the 'housing bubble' areas that is supposed to pop. A lot of mortgage cos have incentives for first time homebuyers since they are trying to keep all of us youngsters here in LI.

Its tough to even rent on LI...especially while saving for a DP.

We are very lucky to rent an apt from my parents for a lot less than we would have paid elsewhere, but its still tough to save.

As for planning a wedding while buying a house.. it depends if you are a high stress person. I would be neurotic doing both at the same tims, but thats just me. The homebuying is a lot more stressful than wedding planning.

I would go to open houses on Saturdays and Sundays with FH and look at what is out there so that you have prices to compare. I did that with FH in the fall and winter and we bought and closed in January. We wanted to buy a house before we got married because neither one of us wanted to move back into anything smaller than a house (I grew up in a 1 bedroom apartment with 5, yes 5 people for 18 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) For me, I was like NO WAY! Not going back to that again!

FH and I were very adamant about living together before we got married so we started searching for a house about a year and a half ago...we only found our house in April of this year and move in May 1st!!! If you think the costs will be too stressful to buy a house before you get married then I say don't.

There is no way we can afford one now or before the wedding. Sadly though, my dad will be selling our house a few months after i move out, so when he does he'll be giving us money to help us get a house of our own. So hopefully a year after we are married we can buy a house.

We are waiting a year after we are married. We want to have a large deposit.
I have a co-op right now., and we will live there and save. I dont think im selling it for the house., i want to keep it as an income!

our plan is to buy a house before we get marrried and move in so after our honeymoon we can come home to it..but housing in LI is expensive and i'm picky lol so we'll see...i will not overpay for a house..i refuse!

We closed on our house about 2 months ago, and Ihave to say there has been equal stress and excitement. We want to do all the home improvements right away, but we have the wedding to pay for. IMO and my experience if you can wait till closer to te wedding or after I;d say wait, BUT still save as much$$$$ as possible. We both have good jobs and had a sizeable down payment, but getting used to all the new responsibilities on top of wedding stuff and life in general is a bit challening...Good Luck

IMHO: We just bought a house and closed this month. In retrospect, we should have waited on either the wedding or the house because now the wedding is about 6 months away and we have a house with no appliances and no furniture and we are paying more than double what we did in our apartment. Plus, wedding bills are piling....

If I were to do it over again, I would space the two biggest money suckers of our lives a bit away from each other just so there isn't such a financial strain.

HTH!!

I would look casually but this is definitely something you don't want to rush in to!

We are waiting for two years after the wedding SO we have a big down payment - I didnt want to rush into anything and feel added stress during the planning

Tilde, that was a smart decision. FH &I planned on buying early 2008 Ideally moving in April'08. We are getting married in June '08. This is why we were trying to get everything we could get done in advance done.

We've started 'pre-shopping' w/ Optimum homes & MLSLI.com. For our budget in the area we want to live, we wouldn't be able to afford 'move in quality homes'. If we strech the area out a bit, * are able to afford move-in quality homes, there is still work/ task that would need to be done shorly after we move in anyway.

A home is a huge investment, and we're considering waiting to buy our , that way we can buy in our desired neighborhood. Moving is such a hassel, we kow ourselfs and will most likey opt not to upgrade 5yrs later, like alot of couples do. But if we happen to get lucky and find it when we're looking to move we'll jump on it, altho our plan B is to move to a different development.

i think i want to hold off.. plus besides the cost of the home.. you have the closing costs..of course you are going to want new furniture, paint, new appliances.. i think bit too much on top of the cost of the wedding
