buying house? coop? condo? renting?

i've been renting apartments for 2 1/2 years now and decided i want to buy a house. guess what? i can't. can't afford it.

what's the next step?

i'm actually kind of tired of renting an apartment. maybe renting a house would be better?? I feel like there's more room?? i like knowing i can pack up and go anytime but at the same time i want to know i own something and it's mine.

just venting/thinking out loud so i apologize.......

we've been renting for a few years now too. sometimes i feel like its such a waste but with Long Island's prices...we cant buy. if we rented a house and it was $1500 a month per say...sure people would say you can put that toward a mortgage but at the same time we dont have money to go through the house buying process and then on top of that to pay all the utilities AND anything that goes wrong...LI *****

I know how you feel. FH and I were looking at houses/condos and it is just crazy the prices they are asking.

move to CT with me

but on a serious note, we've been renting for awhile and every month when i write that $1500 check, I just cringe bc I am pi$$ing money away. we decided to buy a house, we don't care how tight things will be bc we just cannot waste anymore money....so starting in may (hopefully!) i will no longer be able to shop, it will be a sad day but at least i will be a homeowner.

if you can't afford a house, i would try to look into condo's/townhouses, they are more affordable and at least you own something. o and i recommend a bigger apartment, our first apartment was a 1 bedroom, well we did not have enough storage and space, now we are in a huge 2 bedroom and things are much better.

i def can feel you on this. My fh just started renting an apartment and its crazy to think that money is going down the drain BUT we cant afford a down payment on top of paying for the wedding. We're hoping to pay down our debt now so after the wedding we can use most of that money for a down payment on either a condo or house. Even condos are a huge expense...long island is just crazy. We're also of thinking about moving out of state so we may just rent and then when we have enough money for a down payment-use it for a house out of state and make our move then.

how about a house in Queens ( still expensive but maybe not as much ) ..... i hate paying rent and when you have a house u have to pay rent , water , light and everything !!!!!!!!!! its crazy !!!

the wedding is almost here ... maybe after the wedding you can buy one ... townhouses are nice too,,,

i have no idea how we are affording it, well actually right now FH is putting all the money into it and I am very lucky for it, but once we get in, I don't know how, but it will work out somehow

aww I know how you feel... FH and I are also planning to buy a house he refuses to rent! but in reality with the wedding planning and everything you should take it easy and between now and the wedding try to save and see how much money you can come up with!! good luck

Same here my fh has been renting an apt for over a year and his lease is up in july so we are talking now on what to do....The only thing is then you have property taxes a water bill ect things we have already included with the apt.
I know what you are going through and with getting married it is the next step its just a very big one as well.

Its really annoying to have to rent. We have a great apt now, but I would love to buy something. We (finally) paid our debt off, and now all the credit card payments we were making goes right into a savings account for a down payment. We are also thinking of moving out of state, but if the housing market continues the way it is now in a couple of years we will def try to buy something here.

i think my whole thing is that i want it now, now, now. it's so rare that i get that way, but when I want something, i want it lol.

Jackie, i know exactly what you mean with the renting of a house and a mortgage. i can't afford all the extras on top. haha

so i can basically have a house and pay the mortage, but i'll have no food, water, electric, etc, etc. it'll be peachy

and also, a lot of girls say 'o move out of state' well a few things to consider....like CT is still expensive, taxes are low but the houses in Fairfield County are the same if not more than Long Island...also think about jobs, if you move to the country in PA, you might get paid less hence having less for that mortgage payment. i would never get paid what i get now if i moved to like New Hampshire. it all goes hand in hand....

if you can make it past the fees you can find a house that has an apartment and have the rent help pay your mortgage but then you have strangers in your house and you have to worry about fixing their crap

09er crashing! FH and I just started looking into where we are going to live once we get married. We just started looking into co-ops, but we are not sure if we are going to buy or rent. Also, we are looking into renting with the option to buy that way we are not totally throwing away our money and its affordable for us. If you look on MLS, sometimes in the description it will tell you if the owner is willing to do this.
