Did anyone buy their own wedding cake from their favorite bakery or did you stay with the hall's wedding cake?
I am concerned with who my catering hall is using as a bakery. Read lots of reviews on the web and they are not positive.
Help!!!

Re: Buying your own wedding cake
FMIL is buying our cake from a different bakery as a gift. We were given a credit at the RH. But the new cake is costing $8 per slice.

Wait I have another cake question...
I've heard its cheaper to get a smaller pretty wedding cake and then just get a big sheet cake in the same flavor to serve the guests with. Will all bakeries/halls do that? And does it make a difference with the price. I haven't really looked into this at all yet, but I was wondering if anyone else knew about it. Thanks!
I've heard this is a great way to save $ too, because your guests will see the pretty cake you display and cut during the cake cutting part, but since its smaller, you obviously pay a lot less for it, and considering it is decorated pretty, they can be real expensive, and then you get a plain undecorated sheet cake in the same flavor to serve. The guests won't see it, and when he cake is served its all cut up anyway, so it really doesnt matter. Sheet cakes you can get probably like 2-3 a slice, so you would save a bit of money.

Yes you will save alot of money...You dont have to get it smaller though...What they do is give you like a model of the cake...One tier will be real for you and Fh to cut...The rest is all done on these model tiers with no cake inside obviously and they just put fondant over it. And you serve your guests from sheet cake, plus its faster bc it can already be cut from ahead of time. Most places will do this and it will be easy to find someone who does...Good luck

Please just keep in mind that this isn't always a good option! Sheet cake, yes.... but the 'model' cake is not always a cheaper option. The decoration on the cake is what costs the most money due to the amount of time/labor spent... if you have the decorations on the outside of the cake, it will be just as expensive as the same amount of labor is needed as when there is actual cake inside. the sheet cake can definitely be a less expensive option though. just make sure to do your research!

I am NOT thrilled about Jericho Terrace's cakes.
IMO the baker that they use doesn't decorate all that well.
JMHO.

Re: Buying your own wedding cake
Then get your own. You shouldn't have to eat that cost, either, they will credit you some money toward the rest of your bill. Of course, it's not the same amount when you buy your own cake, but people do this all the time. I'm doing it with my flowers--we get centerpieces, but they're cheap things and I want to do it myself anyway. We're getting our cake from the Black Forest Bakery and I've heard good things about them. I care more what the cake tastes like than if it's some amazing thing--I just want it nicely iced, then we're going to put fresh flowers on top. Also, my mom is baking us a special cheesecake too.

Fortunately my RH offers various cakes all of which I skimmed through and seemed great. Def. not going to bring one in trying to budget a bit there. Good luck!!

Hmmm i didnt really pay too much attention to their cakes...But my taste in cakes is COMPLETELY different than cakes that an RH provides, so before i even looked at halls, i knew i was getting it elsewhere.
Well they have ABSOLUTELY no problem with you bringing in your own cake...The guy said to me yeah go ahead do whatever you want, and then he asked who i was using, and when I told him he was telling me about a bride recently who used her and how great her cake looked...Definitely talk to them
