Which cake? EDITED! FH likes the first one. I kinda love the second one but we will change the brown to our wedding colors of red orange and pink with gerber dasies. Our cake filling is going to be fresh napolean (they mix real fresh whipped cream with bavatian cream) and add in fresh straberry slices and blueberries. DELICIOUS! I
Which so you prefer? #1-FH favorite. We would replace tulips with gerber dasies and each tier would have a diff colored ribbon; red, orange and pink.
#2: Just found this one and LOVE it. Would change brown dots to pink and orange and then put red ribbons round each tier to break em up. We would add gerber dasies.
Which do you like better?

Re: Cake Help!
Personally, I like the first one - your FH's favorite.
I'm not a fan of the basket weave look either - especially not for a wedding. To me it seems informal (but this is just my opinion!)
ETA - Wait, did you change the pictures?
I like the one with the green ribbons and now has tulips on it.
Hmm... Now it seems you changed them back.

Understandable. Our wedding isnt super formal though. The rooms looks likea greenhouse-all glass and its a sunday morning. FH will wear a tux and my dress is traditional, but our colors and themes are not.
LMAO I was trying to fix them! They posted wrong the first time lmao. So you still like FH one? #1?

just my opinion -- if you like the look go for the look -- you can always peel away the fondant when you eat it.

P.S. All of those are beautiful by the way!

Re: Cake Help!
don't really like the basket weave - reminds me of a quinceanera or sweet 16 cake. i really like the others though, especially the one with the little flowers on it.

Ok so we all prefer looks over taste :) Heh...Ok so basketweave is out. Now do you love #1 or prefer any of the others?

Re: Cake Help!
ok two things first...One DONT do whipped cream in July, whipped cream melts extremely fast and if it gets just a little bit warm wherever the cake is, it will become a disaster.
2nd-not every fondant tastes bad, most buy the fondant but there are many bakers now who are actually making their own fondant and tastes great, some mix it with marshmellows now...recently i had a cupcake with fondant icing and it was the best part.
But you can also use buttercream under the fondant if the place doesnt make their own. Or the best solution and this is actually cheaper so its a plus...You make the one layer that you will cut into real cake, the rest will be models with the fondant over it but no cake inside and you ask for sheetcake to be served to your guests...it will also cut down on price of cake, cut down on the cake cutting price that Rh's charge and its alot quicker, bc guests dont have to wait until the cake is cut

This was my cake. The gerbers are edible, the icing is whipped cream.

They usually do a crumb coat on cakes using buttercream so that the fondant sticks better to the cake, so guests can always peel it off. Whipped cream--even with gelatin whipped in--can become unstable in warm weather very fast.

Re: Cake Help!
OOO good call on the whipped cream. ESPO. i thought since the hall has Ac it would be fine but better to eb safe than sorry. We dont wnat to freeze our guests to maintain the cake.
As far as price goes though, we dont have to pay anything extra for the cake. It is all included in our price per person. That was one of the things we LOVED. they ahve a bakery on their grounds and i spoke to the baker-shes isgreat. Said she can amke anything we want and no extra charge unless we want something weird like an actual napolean cake.
They will put layer of buttercream underneath but its thin. I just HATE fondant. We went to a tasting there and I tasted one of the cakes with fondant. The cake was OUT OF THIS WORLD but the fondant was super sweet and im not a sweets girl to begin with. Hehe perfer dill pickle potato chips to chocolate any day.
But thanks for the FYI about making only the top layer of the cake real-that was something I didnt know and would probably help lots of brides to cut costs.

Yes, #1 still gets my vote.
But go with what you like - if it's a garden theme and you think the basket weave fits, then by all means, GO FOR IT!! It's your wedding!

Re: Cake Help!
I didnt love the look either but I LOOOOVE the taste of whipped cream so i was willing to sacrifice appearance. But most people seem to think peeling off fondant will be fine.
RK bride, if you dont like fondant or whipped cream, what do you suggest?

Re: Cake Help!
MPas, its not gross. its just really sweet. Its basically pure sugar, like those flowers we used to love as kids. on birthday cakes. Its rolled out sheet of sugarry stuff to give you a smooth look. Its just very very sweet. My Fh likes it but he has a major sweet tooth. It can be peeled off easily.
I just prefer whipped cream myself for taste.

Talk to the baker about doing the cake all in buttercream, which is a possibility. This is something I want to talk to the baker about too since I don't like fondant and love whipped cream but am concerned about the heat factor...and personally, I do not want to have my guests peeling off the fondant on the cake.

Re: Cake Help!
LOL buttercream-they suggested that at the RH but its not as smooth as the fondant and if Im not going with whipped cream I want that smooth as glass look. It is delicious though.
As far as peeling it off, they do it for me before they slice it.
