I just visited my baker who is anti fondant and says it tastes like wax. Anyone agree or disagree? Also, what flavors and fillings are you ladies doing? What do you recommend. My baker was nice but I left more confused than ever. I love the look of Fondant.... HELP, cake info needed.

Re: Cake types and flavors? Fondant, good or bad?
I hate fondant...it tastes like sugared play dough to me. Butter cream or whipped cream are for me.

I am getting the idea. I think I will nix fondant although it looks so pretty. Now I do not know what filling to do. Suggestions? I am thinking cannoli cream. My baker said don't do too many different flavors b/c than people switch plates and it gets messy.
We did cannoli cream and chocolate mousse and it was awesome.

I dont really like fondant, but it makes the cake look really smooth and pretty. My baker actually had us taste his fondant when we met with him to show us it wasn't horrible. His actually was pretty good! If you want fondant, maybe try to find a baker that makes it good?
ETA: Most bakers who use fondant will put a layer of buttercream underneath it. This way you have the yummy buttercream underneath when you peel off the fondant.

the best description of fondant taste wise is playdough. the few times i have tried it, it tastes exactly how playdough smells.
from what i heard, ganashe (sp?) can get the fondant look such as the smoothness but i think it's chocolate so maybe it can't be dyed

I've had delcious fondant and it didn't taste like wax at all. It all depends on the baker.

Thanks ladies. I am thinking maybe white chocolate ganache can give the look I want? Whatever, I guess as long as it tastes good.

Fontant is chewy and doesn't taste great. I think it looks great but tastes foul! You can have the bakery do several other options that achieve the look fondant with out the chewiness!

I don't like fonant. I feel it REALLY takes away from the taste of the cake.
well..honestly every baker is different. I will say again that Erga did a great job with our cake and the fondant tasted like a sweet icing! It was perfect! Aside from looking fab it tasted fab...girls that are thinking about it...dont rule it out because of some ladies saying it tastes gross...a good baker makes it tastes good!

I agree with your baker. Fondant looks nice and you can make a beautiful looking cake but to me they taste like garbage. Buttercream is yummy but you can't mold it. Buttercream is also much less expensive.

ITA - I can deal with it, but its very chewy. For my cake I def want RED VELVET with Butter cream icing. Yum!

Yea, fondant looks pretty but us pretty gross. Buttercream or whipped cream are way better!
