Ok so someone posted on the 2011 board a picture of a cake (that i am assuming belonged to a 2010 bride because she said she purchased the brooches and the cake topper).... anyway i fell head over heels in love with the cake and emailed the picture to my baker... the cake is included with the reception hall and i have 30 options to choose from... the pictured cakes look like they are made with fondont (i want icing) and many have bows on them that have notes that you need to supply the ribbon.....
So the cake below has two bows that are made from gumpaste- but the baker said to have this cake (which is similar to many of the included cakes, but much prettier) i would need to pay upgrades:
$555 for gumpaste bows and fondont $290 for gumpaste bows and icing $97 for icing and ribbon bows
Is this expensive or average???
P.S. if this is your cake, do you have more pictures of it???
our cake is not included by venue so we know wedding cake prices. cakes can be VERY expensive depending on what you want. all things such as bows, lace, fondant are expensive as they take the most time. something to remember with icing is it will show any imperfection so just something to consider. prices seem about fair. however, i would try and haggle that top price down just a little. some places have cakes starting out at nearly 1k for something that looks decent!

Re: Cake upgrade pricing- is it too much????
It all depends on who you use. I am using a baker not affiliated with my RH and the prices were very reasonable. This is my cake (exterior will be a very thin layer of fondant with BC underneath) I supply the ribbon and the 2 brooches. The etchings on the tiers will be done by hand in pearlized stuff. My cake for 100 people is less than your add-ins by your RH.
Mine will be all ivory, not the darker champagne color and the bows will be shorter.
Got the brooches and topper today

Re: Cake upgrade pricing- is it too much????
hmm i think its expensive. im paying 350 upgrade & that includes, 4 tier all round fondant cake which will have a design on it ( the bakery is using a rolling pin that already has an imprint on it, its really cool) a white shimmery fondant bow (im buying the brooch), & lavender pearls made of royal icing on two of the tiers (the other 2 will have rhinestone banding which im also buying)
the biggest difference with the cake you like and mine is that it has 2 bows instead of one. who is the bakery? The one you like is gorg!!! i just think the price is a bit much.

I think fondant upgrades are usually $450. We're not doing fondant in an effort to save money and taste. We're paying $150 for butter cream with a swirl design and they're going to put a layer of ribbon that we will provide.
From our bakery it was $450 for fondant, $350 for White Chocolate, $150 for butter cream...

Ya I've bought the brooches and found the rhinestone pins but it comes down to the gumpaste bows. I'm using rolling pin bakery

I wouldn't personally pay that much for a cake, let alone upgrades to one. It's a BEAUTIFUL cake though.
What if you just use REAL ribbon?

My cake was included. I had to pay for an upgrade to square $50 and fondant $150. They provided the real ribbon that was on the tiers and and I provided rhinestone banding for all 4 tiers. I know that I called the Rolling Pin because they were an option for me. I was so displeased with the way I was treated, I used the other in house bakery for my RH. I believe that you can also look on etsy for people who make cake decorations, but I am not positive. Might be a cheaper alternative.

Can I use any kind of brooch, or is there a special kind of wedding cake brooch that is lighter?

The upgrade price has more to do with him having to make the bows out of gumpaste or attach the ribbon

Re: Cake upgrade pricing- is it too much????
i used rolling pin bakery in east setauket and was VERY pleased with their service and product and upgrade pricing. the owner is a young guy and i met him and his wife actually and i think they remember from experience how every little detail of a wedding/cake is very important. the bakery shop itself is SUPER CUTE!

hi junebride14! those prices you listed are *not* expensive. i would actually call them very good. i did a TON of price shopping since for me the cake was really important. if you find prices cheaper than that, then check for quality problems - ingredients, reliability, the baker's experience, etc. (BTW - i love your profile photo. pretty darn adorable.)

That sounds like an awful lot of money to me...can you see if anything is negotiable?
I love, love, love that cake though!

Re: Cake upgrade pricing- is it too much????
If u look at my engagement party album u will see my cake there, gorgeous it was, I designed it, we payed extra to have it be fondant total cake price was 550$ venue payed 300$ of cost. Although cake was stunning and the fondant made it beautiful, the taste of the fondant made it a yucky tasting cake :( I definitely won't be doing fondant for my wedding, and definitely not paying more for it. Although if u just do small detailing in fondant like the bows, it shouldn't cost you that much more.

Re: Cake upgrade pricing- is it too much????
I don't really think its expensive. My hall didn't include my cake and for 4 tiers sugar flowers and butter cream with a design in butter cream cost me just under a grand. Usually when the hall pays its bare minimum my sister used to work at the bakery that is the house bakery for a couple of places and the halls only paid for 275 to 350 of the cakes

I don't think thats bad... we're spending around 2k for ours. But from this board, it looks like we're not the norm.
