Cake upgrade pricing- is it too much????

Original post by JuneBride14

Ok so someone posted on the 2011 board a picture of a cake (that i am assuming belonged to a 2010 bride because she said she purchased the brooches and the cake topper).... anyway i fell head over heels in love with the cake and emailed the picture to my baker... the cake is included with the reception hall and i have 30 options to choose from... the pictured cakes look like they are made with fondont (i want icing) and many have bows on them that have notes that you need to supply the ribbon.....

So the cake below has two bows that are made from gumpaste- but the baker said to have this cake (which is similar to many of the included cakes, but much prettier) i would need to pay upgrades:

$555 for gumpaste bows and fondont
$290 for gumpaste bows and icing
$97 for icing and ribbon bows

Is this expensive or average???

P.S. if this is your cake, do you have more pictures of it???

my cake was amazing... and i dont regret the costs at all.

upgrades were around 350? upgrades included the fondant bows.

the 'parts' cost about 150

If u look at my engagement party album u will see my cake there, gorgeous it was, I designed it, we payed extra to have it be fondant total cake price was 550$ venue payed 300$ of cost. Although cake was stunning and the fondant made it beautiful, the taste of the fondant made it a yucky tasting cake :( I definitely won't be doing fondant for my wedding, and definitely not paying more for it. Although if u just do small detailing in fondant like the bows, it shouldn't cost you that much more.

My MOH bought her mom a fondant cake for her bday and she said everyone scraped off the fondant, so I know I won't pay an upgrade for something most people find too sweet...

i used rolling pin bakery in east setauket and was VERY pleased with their service and product and upgrade pricing. the owner is a young guy and i met him and his wife actually and i think they remember from experience how every little detail of a wedding/cake is very important. the bakery shop itself is SUPER CUTE!

i am using rolling pin!

i definitely don't want the fondant icing but am not sure if the ribbon bows will look as pretty

i was also a little confused bc the 30 cakes that are included from my hall have ribbon or objects on them and the baker said i just need to supply them so i am unsure where the extra $100 comes in for ribbon i would supply on an icing cake

Just met with our bakery today (La Bonne Boulangerie) and picked our cake! Yay so excited!!! We are getting the cake that latinaj had....ivory fondant with pearlized fondant bows with the brooches, the crystal cake pins on 2 tiers and an 'F' monogram cake topper

Inside is going to be- 2 tiers of chocolate cake with layers of raspberry fruit filling and chocolate ganache, and two tiers of vanilla yogurt pound cake with layers of raspberry fruit filling and chocolate ganache, iced with vanilla buttercream, and topped with thinned fondant.

Sooo excited!!!

was your cake included with your RH.. if so how much were your upgrade charges?

also where did you get the crystal cake pins? i found some on ebay but didn't know if i wanted to put the people at the hall through having to pull them all out to serve the cake

The basic cake was included at my RH. The upgrades cost $550. Plus what I spent on the cake bling (brooches, cake pins). Sorry I can't be more help about where to look for the cake pins- I bought them from a '10-er (latinaj). I'm not concerned about the RH having to pull all the pins out- they better though lol! I will definitely by reselling them on here after the wedding since I will have no need for them after that.

75 I believe. My baker said that they will space them evenly to make sure that 75 cover both tiers

Something to think about...I ran the idea of using buttercream frosting instead of fondant by my baker for that cake and he said that while he could do it if I wanted, it may not be strong enough to 'hold' the gumpaste bows with the brooches in place and that they could slide, as well as the cake pins wouldn't stay put very well and he was afraid it would end up looking sloppy or lopsided as everything settled throughout the few hours sitting out at the RH.
