cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

Hi.

Just wondering which one you are going for. I really think I liked the stacked cakes better so I am pushing FH to go for that, however he likes the oldfashioned multi-tiered cakes.

Also which is better in terms of holding up, butter cream or fondant. I like the look of fondant but I feel the taste is to sweet.

What are you guys doing?

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

We are going to do the bottom layers stacked and only the top layer teired (FI liked all Teired so it was a good compromise). We'll be using buttercream because my hall charges extra for the fondant and I don't deem that a necessary expense. I do like the look on fondant better though : ).

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

Stacked for me. IMO the tiers look a lot like the cakes used at Sweet Sixteens. Plus it limits your design options.

Fondant is prettier but buttercream tastes better.

We had a very simple square stacked cake so we decided to use buttercream...but if I had a specific design in mind that required some artistry, I would have gone with fondant.

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

I did stacked buttercream. I just like stacked better than tiered. I hear buttercream tastes better than fondant. Tell you the truth, I wasn't too picky with the cake.

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

This was mine! Whipped cream, canoli filling with fresh strawberries and marble cake. Yum!

Be careful with buttercream, some bakeries use crisco insted of butter because you can't get the icing white with real butter. The butter makes it off white to yellow.
Fondant holds up well but doesn't taste too good.
Don't worry too much. No matter what you chose it will be great!

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

I used to work @ the Milleridge and know that the real buttercream is indeed yellow (because of the butter)- it does look nice though. Fondant tastes not so good in my opinion.
I've seen the baker @ the Milleridge use real whipped cream- beautiful & yummy.

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

I like the stacked idea...and while I really really like the look of fondant, I've heard it's just too sweet. But, I've also heard that for summer brides, fondant is the way to go because buttercream doesn't hold up well in warm weather. Same goes for whipped cream. (If you want a cake that will be displayed all night, it's wise not to choose whipped cream).

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

I'm actually doing the tiered and the reason why is that we are replicating my fmil and ffil's cake. They have an amazing marriage that we admire and we figured it would be a huge honor to them to have a copy of the cake at ours- something traditional... kind of feeding me into the family. Also, this is going to be the one very traditional thing that we have at my wedding... Sweet and old fashioned...
But I do like stacked also. It's very pretty.

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

We are having a tiered cake....my FH wanted one, and being that he hasn't had much to do with decision making, I let him have his way!! I think both are beautiful, but not something I'm going to stress out about.....

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

All this talk of cake and I am getting hungry. We are actually just letting the caterer take care of the cake, it is not something we are stressing over. In fact the caterer says he does not even serve the cake because he does other types of desserts that are better. At first I thought that was weird but now I am not going to stress over it!!

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

I got whipped cream because I totally do not like the way buttercream or fondant taste. I think fondant looks the coolest though. We did the old fashioned tiered, just because we wanted something traditional.

stacked & buttercream is what I want. Have you spoken to Linda about cakes? Are you using one of theirs or choosing your own?

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

endlessluv - A friend of mine hates any kind of cake or frosting. She had her catering hall make her a huge Oreo cookie sundae for her and she ate that instead! I say get what you like. If you want a Carvel ice cream cake, then get one! I think they make individual sized ones, so you could get that!

Here's a close up of our cake - it was a type of buttercream, but whipped and smoothed out to look like fondant.

Re: cakes- stacked or tiered- buttercream of fondant

We had a stacked cake with buttercream icing. It was simple, and had a basketweave design. I've posted it before, let's see if I can get it up again.
