Calling off engagment

Original post by Onedayatatime

I have been engaged for a few months and i feel that i need to call of the engagement but cant bring myself to do it. 6 months after we started dating i found out that he was talking to another girl online and on the phone about sex. I talked to her, she had saved all the online conversations and sent them to me and he lied about having a girlfirend. We talked about the issues and he promised he wouldnt never hurt me like this again. Four years later we got engaged in July, then in september i found out that he ran into a girl from high school exchanged phone numbers and he was trying to convince her to come to our house to have sex with him. When i asked him about it, he lied to me and said he had no idea what i was talking about. When he finally admitted what happened he said she never came over and that he only did it because he likes knowing that other girls were intersting in him and he liked the attention. We have been having other issues to like he expects me to do all of the house work myself. He will sit on the sofa, drinking a beer. no matter how much i ask him to help he refuses. He tells me that hes tired from a long day at work but i work full time too and still have to do the house work. He gets mad if i dont do his laundry. If dinner isnt on the table when he walks in the door hes mad for the rest of the night. I have talked to him about the problems but nothing seems to change. I know that i need to leave but cant bring myself to do it. I feel guilty wanting to leave and he tells me how much he loves me, hes sorry he messed up again, and he never wants to hurt me again. Any advice at all would be great. Thank you!

Sounds like you need to move on. I was in something like this and got out and it was the best thing for me.

i agree with all the girls. You need to break off the engagement at the very very least. And you should also move on from the relationship all together as sad and hard as it might be for you.

Like you said, you know what you have to do, its just a matter of doing it. I was also in a bad relationship with other issues going on and it wasnt that I thought I should stay in it, it was a matter of my heart- which loved him and my head- which knew that love wasnt everything to combine and make the right decision which would effect the rest of my life.

As far as advice on acutally moving on- sometimes spending time with your friends, both female and male will allow you to see what else is out there. I dont mean that you should move on with another guy whatsoever to get over your current relationship- that would be a BAD idea, but actually feeling the friendship of other people will give you strength to see that there is life after this relationship. One can know that but after a while in a serious relationship, people sometimes loose sight of the other things in their life and other relationships which in turn makes it hard to leave the person who currently is so much a part of your life right now.

Good luck!!!! I really wish you the best.

Re: Calling off engagment

My heart really goes out to you, I know that this is such a devastating and heartbreaking time in your life. My sister went through a very similiar situation they were 5 months away from getting married and her fiance' cheated on her. It is an extremely difficult thing to have to go through and it was very hard for her to throw away the 6 years that they were together even under those circumstances. But trust me the first few months will be difficult but you have to really know what you want in life and just keep saying that over and over again to yourself, because deep inside you know that you don't deserve this. You deserve to be treated like a princess. Most of all you want someone to treat you the way that you treat them and thats how it should always be. You can do it just stay strong and don't give into him when your feeling down about all this. Good luck and remember you always have us to lean on.

I definitely agree with all the girls. This is not a good man. This is a very bad man who will make an awful, abusive husband. I hate to be blunt but that is the truth. He is already being abusive to you. You already know that you don't deserve this. He is treating you like cr*p and this WILL NOT STOP. Even if things are good right after the wedding, that 'honeymoon' phase will end, and as the years go by, he will get worse and worse. Imagine how he will act when he knows you are already his wife and have so much invested in the relationship. It will be a lot worse than it is now, as now is the time he is still supposed to make you realize that you belong together and that he will make a good husband.

Just picture yourself after the heartache, and with a brand new man who treats you like gold, as you deserve to be treated. You definitely have to get ouf ot this relationship asap. I am so sorry you are going through this. It will be tough for a little while, but then everything will work out. It always does. Good luck!!!

Re: Calling off engagment

I know must be very difficult to leave the person you love and have been with for the last few years. From what you posted, it really sounds like you are doing a lot for him that he takes for granted. You don't HAVE to do any of these things for him, (his laundry, clean up without his help) but you do them and he should appreciate it. Him getting angry is an indication that he is selfish and expects that this is your job or duty. Which leads me to summize that he doesn't respect you on some level, and this will only get worse and worse over time. That's a problem within its self, aside from the other thing you metioned about the other girl. I'm not a therapist or anything, but I always remember this one quote, ' pay attention to the pebbles that are thrown at you, before you get hit by a rock'. Honestly, take care of yourself, sometimes we love people that are just no good for us or they're just no good. You can't change poeple who are like this. I really hope whatever your circumstances are you don't stay with this person because life's just too short and it doesnt sound like he respects you. I just wanted to give a little advice, and I really wish you luck and strength.

So sorry you are going through this!!! I do not know you but it sounds like you deserve better!!! I had to end my previous engagement because my fiance kept lying to me and stole my money. I cried for months but in the end it worked out. You are worth more than this guy is giving you. Please FM if you need to talk!

WOW! I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through this. You really do need to leave him. Trust me you will be better off in the end. I was engaged once before and for other reasons was unhappy, I know it's hard when you have already booked things and everyone knows about the wedding and all but if you don't do it this is going to be how the rest of your life is, you deserve better! It was hard to call it off at first but I don't regret it for a minute, I ended up finding someone who treats me the way I deserve to be treated, who loves and respects me and who would do anything for me. I am truly in love. If I hadn't gotten out of my last relationship I would either be miserable or divorced by now and missing out on the best times of my life and sharing it with the person that I am really supposed to be with. Once the initial shock is over it gets easier to move on every day. Please don't marry this person, you will regret it!!!! Good luck to you, FM me if you need someone to talk to.

Not to get all technical, but there is something called the cycle of violence...and it seems like you are one step away from getting caught in it. There is such thing as emotional violence and you are victim. Not to mention the cheating, which is the name I would definitely give to both of those incidents you described. GET OUT...we are all stronger than we think, but the longer you wait the less you will believe that. Let your family/friends know ahead of time so they can support you from the second it happens. Have a plan, know exactly what you are going to do and where you are going to go when you tell him it's over. Love is important and it is nice to hear when the person we want to love us says they do, but this isn't love, it's cruel and unfair and you deserve better!

Sorry to hear that you are dealing with this problem. But, in all honestly you need to pick up and leave him. For starters, he lies too much and you can trust someone like that. You have already caught him in the act of doing something that will only hurt you in the end. It doesn't seems to me that anything bothers him. It may pain you to leave but what are you really losing. (NOTHING) But, you are keeping your sanity.

IYou know what you have do. U said you need to move on.

You have many issues with him. These issue will not change after you get married. As for the cheating I wouln't be surprise if he has already cheating on you in the past and you don't know it. I also wouldn't doubt that if you continue with him he will cheat on you.

I think u need to be strong and let him go. You can find someone out there that can treat you right.

Good Luck and God Bless You.
