I can speak and understand Spanish but I pretend not to. Why? Because I often catch spanish speakers talking about me and the look on their faces when I say 'La rubia habla y comprende espanol.' is priceless.

i speak german. i lived there for a year and my BA is in german lit and language. i havent spoke it in a while, FH and i speak it 2gether sometimes, but not that much so i am sure i have lost some of it. when i was studying german i was really interested in mid-evil german and how it was related to english. i would love to do my PhD on that...
i have a few basic understandings of how other languages work, b/c i teach english and did my MA in linguistics, i know how grammars of other languages work.

Fluent in French... 'used to' in Spanish (now catch 50% of a conversation or if they are talking about me!). 8 years of Latin.

Everything you wrote is almost exactly what I would post! Weird... Except that I only took 3 years of Latin, not 8. I also used to be able to read and speak a little Afrikaans, but it's been so long that I'm sure I'm very rusty.

Besides English, I'm fluent in Polish. I took French for 6 years in school, but I'm a bit rusty. I also have a talent for learning words and phrases in other languages, so I know some words and phrases in Spanish, Italian, Russian, Greman and Japanese.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read it!
And I answered this question on LIF yesterday and said almost exactly the same thing...at least I'm consistent!
