My friend has a 1 month old boy that she tells me she can't put down b/c he throws a fit and actually holds his breath until she picks him up. I've never heard of such a thing and wonderign if this was healthy- I guess I know the answer to that question though. She tells me that she gives in when he turns red and she will never put him down for fear he will suffocate. I think that is a lot of bull.

Re: can babies hold their breath?
Hi, I never really post on this board b/c i dont have a child but i was reading this post and just wanted to comment. When my sister was younger and didnt get her way she would cry until she practically passed out or hold her breath to faint. My mom was a wreck with this! One day in the park my sis held her breath cause she was mad at my mom and fell back on the concrete!! I dont know about babies holding there breath but when my mom talked to the dr. about my sister he didnt seem overly concerned and said it is common, mind u this was years ago, my sis was around6 at the time. tell ur friend to talk to a dr. about the situation to c how serious it is

Sometimes if they cry enough it seems like they can't breathe

I babysit for my Cousins daughter. When Its time for her to eat she crys and throughs a fit and she holds her breath to the point where she Turns bright red. It is very scary!
Edited to add she is now 5 months. I have been babysitting since Nov. And she has been doing it since then. Its getting better now.

Re: can babies hold their breath?
Im no expert but I cant imagine a baby understanding to hold their breath to get what they want. 1 month old?? Is the baby crying to the point that it seems he's out of breath? That doesnt make sense at all to me. Im curious to hear more on this post..

Im not sure if my cousin holds her breath or she crys so much so hard that she looses her breath. Im sure its her crying to hard and loosing her breath. It only happens when she crys A LOT. It is still very scary!

Re: can babies hold their breath?
I've told her to ask the dr. but she says that he stops when she picks him up s it's ok. Hmmm, to me I wuld think that you are starting to create a bad, very bad habbit, but then again I'm not a mom now, soon hopefully though. I don't think you can suffocate yourself by holding your breath. That makes sence that her son is probably crying so much it seems like he's holding his breath- that is looses his breath for a minute.
thanks ladies! I let you know if I find out more!

Re: can babies hold their breath?
babies holding their breath...hm...that sounds like I think I would call my dr. and make sure the baby doesn't have a breathing problem. The baby doesnt' know to do that I don't think...its too young.
My sister held her breath at like 2 through age 4 maybe when she didn't get what she wanted. She passed out a zillion times, turned blue, eyes rolled back the whole bit. Needless to say she always gets what she wants now....
