Don't get frustrated. You aren't doing anything wrong. We actually bought our house last September before we were even engaged which I am glad we did otherwise who knows if we could now.

Also, not everyone getting married is the same age! There are some girls that have been able to put away money for a few years... we'll all have our time!
Goood point!!!!

This is very true. FH and I are not even close to buying something. We would like to once the wedding is over but we still have a lot of money to save. Everything in NY is so expensive. Between school loans and just being young....its very true some of us have just not had the time to save as much as others.
We will all own our houses when the time is right!
Very true. Everyones situation is different, be it by age, income, current financial responsibilities, etc. FH and I just talked about this yesterday. I have student loans and a car payment to pay....and we can't even begin to save enough towards a house until that's pretty squared away. We're both fairly young, started working just a few years ago, and are currently saving every bit towards the wedding. So as much as we would love to buy a house....it's not going to happen for us anytime soon. Plus, I don't think we'd be able to afford a house in LI anyway. So, not sure if there's really a secret or just working with whatever your present situation is, but don't get discouraged.....when it's the right time, it'll happen.

I really am curious to know and do not want to start any drama from this thread, I just truely would like some info onit.
How are so amny of you girls buying houses while you are paying for a wedding?
I mean My fh and I both make pretty good money. My fh is even a mortgage broker and has a ton of hookups. We will be buying a house shortly after the wedding but there is no way we would be able to afford buying a house and the wedding.
Are we doing something wong? Is there a secret I should know about? Things are so expensive on L.I. it really stinks.
Again I truely do not mean to offend anyone and if i did I am sorry.
We were only able to buy a house now because our parents are paying for most of the wedding. Otherwise, we'd still be renting our apartment. You're not doing anything wrong; this is an expensive time in our lives!

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
our parents combined are paying about 1/3 of the wedding. We are somehow saving up the rest, paying college loans, and squeezing by with a new mortage. In the long run (other than those stupid taxes), it's costing just a little more to own then it does to rent. we also have no money left over for shopping and going out. we haven't been on more than a two day vacation (to a B&B) in the past three years.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
You are not asking anything wrong. My FH and I are a little older. I already own my own home and FH Is moving in with us. Thank God I put the second floor on my house or we would be pretty cramped. We will buy a new house in a few years but to save more money, he will just move in with us. We both have very good jobs but we do not live above our means. You will get the house of your dreams. Budget well!!! And good luck to you

My fh also feels that after the wedding the prices will be even lower than they are now and I really don't mind waiting until after the wedding, I just can't imagine having 2 such huge financial responsibilities at the same time
I agree. Our rent is probably about the same as someone's mortgage right now and when our lease is up next August it only will go up again. After the wedding we will start looking for a house.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
dont stress everyones situations are different
we are going to try to buy a house before the wedding - we are hoping we can do it
but we are getting help playing for the wedding and we both still live home - so we are saving a lot by not paying rent too

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
I often wonder the same thing! FH andI have also been paying rent since we were 17 and went away to college so we never had a chance to save money. I also just finished school. It is going to be a long time before we can afford a house, especially with paying for the wedding ourselves!

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
I also think that there are more people who I realize that are getting financial help from their families. If my parents were paying for my wedding we would already have a house

Hard work, lots of sacrifices and some more hard work...that's how we do it and I'm sure many others do too.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
Don't feel bad. I'm super old, but I don't make much money and can't afford anything right now. We keep looking, but have no money saved. We're hoping to get a house by the time we're like 40. Ha ha.
Everyone is in a different place. I know of someone who's family gave them almost $75K to put down on a house. I WISH I had family cash like that!

I am totally totally with you on this. We (especially FH) is dying to have our own home. But how can we, paying for a wedding AND a house????? On long island, both are so expensive!!!!! So we need to save up.
Everyone's situation is different. Some people have been engaged and saved for a long time. One thing that we definitely don't want to do is get a mortgage we can't afford. We don't want too much debt. Many people did this and now they are losing their homes.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
FH & I plan to move out of state and then purchase. My parents are moving to NC and we are going to move there after the wedding. Economically it is our best option to have the life we want.

honestly if FH didn't own the house he grew up in, we'd be renting too. there would be no way we would be able to afford both, it's hard enough now as it is
That is the same with me FH owns the house he grew up in.. if his parents didnt offer it to us we would be lookng into a condo Age def. matters and the length you have been invoved in your career.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
we are on the older side. fh and i have lived at home our whole relationship. we knew that we would get married about 4 years ago so we have been saving for both the wedding and the house. fh also has not had the best jobs in the past so i have been saving. we pushed off our wedding about 6 months so we would have more time save. hopefully we will have something before the wedding.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?
We don't have a house, we have an apartment! Don't know when we will get a house. If we move to NYC, probably not for a while.... If we stay where we are now (non NY) housing prices are way cheaper and we can probably swing a down payment etc once I graduate law school and start working full time.
I don't even know how much you need to have saved to buy a house on LI and to be honest I'm scared to think about it..

most rec. 20 % but first time buyers can sometimes put 0 down. I think they rec you put a lot down so you dont have to pay interest on it
