Can I Ask A Question?

Can I Ask A Question?

I really am curious to know and do not want to start any drama from this thread, I just truely would like some info onit.

How are so amny of you girls buying houses while you are paying for a wedding?

I mean My fh and I both make pretty good money. My fh is even a mortgage broker and has a ton of hookups. We will be buying a house shortly after the wedding but there is no way we would be able to afford buying a house and the wedding.

Are we doing something wong? Is there a secret I should know about? Things are so expensive on L.I. it really stinks.

Again I truely do not mean to offend anyone and if i did I am sorry.

No, you aren't doing anything wrong. We are getting help with the wedding and received some wedding gifts early. We really aren't putting much down on the house but figured it was better to put our money into buying something than to rent first. We both still live at home and have had the luxury of saving money because of it.

Thanks Jess. I guess I am just frustrated. I have been teaching for 6 yrs and fh is doing good but it is so stressful and scary. I'm sorry if I made you feel unconfortable. I am truely happy for you.

We completely just decided to jump into this. It will be extremely tight for awhile. Hopefully I will get a job on LI and be making more. FH is working any overtime he can get. For now, I am still commuting so I work at my school, teach after school and privately tutor 3 kids.

don't be frustrated, we own our co-op but are in NO position to buy a house right now. Not even a little bit. I'm not sure how the other girls are doing it either, it amazes me

I guess maybe its different if you don't already live together. Because your options are buy before the wedding or start renting and hope not to get into a renting slum.

FH and I have rented for almost 4 years so we haven't been able to save as much as we could if we lived at home.

FH and I live at home and it helps tremendously, but he just started his career and finsihed his MBA and I just switched careers and finsihed my masters. We are technically at the bottom!

I would like to move, I just feel that it is too stressful living on LI...Everyone is so worried about finances, I see people becoming more and more hostile towards each other...

Also, not everyone getting married is the same age! There are some girls that have been able to put away money for a few years... we'll all have our time!

We ae buying a house but its only because we have owned a co-op for the last 4 years and are making a great profit off of it and we are buying my parents house so were getting a decent price on it!! Otherwise we would not be able to do it right now its really hard like you said especially on LI

You're not offending anyone. FH and I would like to buy a house. Right now we both live at home and pay cheap rent to our parents vs. what we would pay in rent if we had our own place. That helps us out a lot. We used to go out all the time and cut back before we got engaged and even more since then. Every little bit helps.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?

We are in contract now on our house and about to close, so I can tell you that it is very overwhelming, especially when planning a wedding! We only decided to look because it is such a good market right now and we figured we would try to buy something rather than rent. We have also been doing the living at home thing to save, which is very annoying at times, but does help.

I would say just start looking casually. You'll see that prices keep coming down (mlsli.com is a great resource) and even though things are a little slow now because of the holidays, I hear January is a great time to buy. My only other piece of advice is to be patient. I felt like it would never happen and here we are, about to purchase our first home. It's really exciting and scary at the same time, but we have seen our friends go through it and you somehow find a way to make it work. Good luck to you!

This is very true, everyone on here are at different ages, and that definately is a contributing factor

honestly if FH didn't own the house he grew up in, we'd be renting too. there would be no way we would be able to afford both, it's hard enough now as it is

we just bought a condo and it will be very tight, but were looking at it like an investment. the money isnt going anywhere and id rather pay towards a mortgage than rent (as long as we are able to do it)...

I guess everyones situation is different.

We will mostl likely need to save for another year after we are married and pray prices drop further.

I feel ya though...sometimes I feel like im missing a secret too- haha

ditto... we are 'renting' from his parents...
thats the ONLY way we are able to do it.. adn they are helping us out if we have ANY struggles... like no hot water or food.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?

FH & I have lived together in apartment complex for 5 years, we've been saving here and there we're looking to buy, but casually looking, we met w/ a Buyers Broker who actually discouraged us. She was talking about how people who bought homes recently are paying mortgages on homes where they are paying more than the actual value of the home. She was saying she would wait another 9 months. We need to move and move quickly since our current lease expires soon.

eta: we are getting a TON of wedding help from my FILs, so our wedding is less of a finacial responsibility for us.

Re: Can I Ask A Question?

My fh also feels that after the wedding the prices will be even lower than they are now and I really don't mind waiting until after the wedding, I just can't imagine having 2 such huge financial responsibilities at the same time

This is very true. FH and I are not even close to buying something. We would like to once the wedding is over but we still have a lot of money to save. Everything in NY is so expensive. Between school loans and just being young....its very true some of us have just not had the time to save as much as others.

We will all own our houses when the time is right!
