Can I get married at a church?

Can I get married at a church?

Can I get married at a church if I'm not baptised or confirmed? My dad is jewish, my mom is catholic. I didn't practice either religion, I've never been to any house of worship other than for weddings. My FH is catholic, baptised, but not practicing. He doesn't go to church ever but i think his family belongs to one. I got bat-mitzvahed in Israel 6 years ago.

Would I be able to get married in a church at my current state? If not, is there something I have to do to be able to get married at church? If I get married at the RH, is it still possible for a priest to be the officiant or would I have to have a justice of the peace?

I BELIEVE you can be married in a church, so long as your fiance' is Catholic (& has made all of his sacraments) & you promise to raise any children you may as Catholic. There are also courses you and your fiance' need to go to before you are allowed to wed in a catholic church.

Catholic priests do not marry anyone outside of the church.... so you'd have to have a justice of the peace, reverend, etc.

This response is correct. Also know depending upon the church, some may ask you to receive the sacraments too. Your FH must have received confirmation in order to be married. If he hasnt then he would have to do that prior to the ceremony.

If you two choose to marry outside the church, then you would need to have an officiant. Catholic priests do not marry outside the church as all sacraments are to be performed inside the church.

It may need to be 'approved' by the Diocese but I know people who have gotten married in the church but aren't baptized and their FH/FW was.

I depends on the church I think. In our church (St. Frances) - me and FH had to be baptized in order for us to get married there.

FH has not had communion or confirmation.. The church said as long as both of us were baptized Catholic, they would marry us.. They strongly*** encouraged Fh to get the rest of his sacraments but let us know it would not prevent them from marrying us! HTH

My FH is Lutheran and I am Catholic. We have both made all our sacraments. We are getting married in my Catholic church. We just had to be approved by the Dioceses and then attend precana (which we have completed). We also had to promise to raise our children Catholic. HTH!

Ok I grew up going to catholic school and now teach in one and have to go to religion classes to get a basic religion certificate for tenure - the priest that teaches my current class said that although people think they need to be confirmed to get married in a catholic church they DO NOT. But definitely check with your church - some might be a little weird about it.

Re: Can I get married at a church?

some churches do things differently. My friend is jewish and his wife is catholic. They were married in a catholic church by a priest (or whatever they're called) AND a rabbi. I think the rabbi was able to do blessings and speak but wasnt allowed to do the actual marriage vow part.

FH is catholic and I'm not. His church would have wanted me to do some of the jazz that they need done and he said no way to it.

Re: Can I get married at a church?

hah the promise to raise my kids catholic could be a problem b/c i already made that promise to judaism, lol. I had a point in my life where i went to israel, became obsessed with it, got bat mitzavahed and wanted to make aliyah. I don't however have any documentation saying I was ever bat mitzvahed...and technically women in Israel don't get bat mitzvahs, just the guys...nor was it a really formal service, as I read in english on the top of masada in shorts and a t-shirt. That said, will this cause a problem with the whole church thing?

Also, my friend got married at the venetian (interfaith) and the catholic officiant was a priest, not a reverand but she said they had to apply for some kind of 'exception' but the priest would not do an outdoor ceremony.

It also depends on the church. Some want your money more than others so they will allow things that others may not! Call them and ask, or have your fiance call since he has gone through everything already.
