When you go to finalize menu and meet your BM for the night just tell them you don't want one. Its a common request. I used to work at catering hall and we never put tip jars out at weddings. I always got tips from guests and the host anyway.

Do you then give the bartender a tip sepearately - how much is appropriate?

I agree, I think it's tacky when there is an obvious tip jar out on the bar. - However, to play devil's advocate, I've ALWAYS tipped the bar tender regardless.......and sometimes it's embarassing for THEM as well as ME when they have to refuse a tip ........maybe reques that they do not have a jar sitting on the table, but if a guest offers a tip (as most of us leave it on the bar anyway) the bartender does not have to refuse the guest. - JMO, it's an akward feeling having someone refuse when you're trying to tip them

No tip jars in sight at my wedding.
If someone wants to tip anyway (we always do), they can have a jar UNDER the bar OUT OF SIGHT.

oh Nooooooooo- please, I DID NOT mean to imply that b/c you don't want a tacky tip jar on the bar, that you don't tip !!! I was just making a suggestion. -

Do we really have to tip the bartenders too?? I was not planning on it...I know the guests will even tho there is not a tip jar...as long as there is not an evident tip jar, it does not matter to me if tehy accept tips!

my hall told us that part of their policy is they will not leave them out.......
i personally dont like it out b/c then i feel guilty if i dont tip.....

No tip jar doesn't mean they won't have a dollar bill tucked under a napkin so it shows. This is what happened at the Millerridege Carriage house and it was a shower. I cringed when I saw it but didn't want to make a scene with the guests there. I didn't see anyone tip him though so I tipped him myself at the end.

I really dont like the idea of the tip jar, but I used to bartend so I understand, but we are going to tip them at the end of the night.

I don't care about the tip jar... at first I thought it was tacky... but FH said that the bartenders deserve all the tips they can get (this is their job)... so if my hall puts them out then that's fine... if not then that's fine too... I am not really concerned about this...

Umm, here;s the thing. I defintiely don;t think theys hould have tip jar out. you're paying gratuity. For those of you who say you don't mind it b/c it's their job, I mean, on that same token, should the guests leave atips at the table for the waitstaff?
