Thanks for replying.....but what I meant was that the couple asked the person --we will call him-- 'William' and he is a single guy, engaged, not religious at all, and does not plan on being married in a church or by any kind of religious figure, was asked to be the godfather....but then someone he does not know was asked to be the godmother...can that be done? a non couple? where the one person isn't religious?

THANKS LADIES!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes t his can be done-they prefer that godparents are both catholic and following-but really all they do is promise to uphold the teachings of the church-they dont have to a bea couple. My godmother is my fathers sister and my godfather is my mothers brother-they are DEFINITELY not dating

yes actually many couples choose one person from the mother's side and one person from the father's side . . .so they definitely do NOT have to be married

Me and FH were able to baptize our daughter.. And obviously werent married...
I also never made my communion or confirmation...
BUT to be a Godparent you must have made your communion and confirmation...
Which to me is crazy, but it is what it is....
God forgive me, but we lied.... to the church
My aunt is our daughter's godmother and my brother is my daughter's godfather and neither made their communion or confirmation....
I wont let anyone tell me that the people I choose arent good enough to be something special in my daughter's life....
I just at it....

Re: Can you Baptize your children if...

A child can be baptized to a couple who has not been married by a priest/minister. The reason being it is not the fault of the child for actions of his/her parents. Baptism is to absolve one of original sin and to welcome them into the religion.

The Godparents are supposed to be those that will help raise the child in the religion so they ask that those Godparents follow the norms of the church. A person does not have to be married to be a Godparent but if the couple to be Godparents are married they should be married by the church.

on this sort of same topic.....can a single person who is engaged but not getting married in a church ---b/c they aren't religious at all----be a 'godparent'??????

im confused as to why a nonreligious person would be chosen as be a godparent or want to be a godparent for that matter, being that it is associated with a religious rite and it is a responsibility of a godparent to encourage and be involved in the religious/spiritual life of the child.

id suggest reading about or talking to the parish about the responsibilities of being a god-parent.

I agree-but I think that today most parents are the ones that take responsibility of their child religious upbringing more so then the God Parents, neither one of my god parents had anything to do with my going to religion or church on Sundays, etc. I think now parents choose 2 people that given unseen circumstances they can entrust the responsibility to them-and people that will be an important part of their childs life.

Re: Can you Baptize your children if...

So FH was asked by a friend to be the godfather of their second child. Now I have a HUGE problem with this b/c we ARE not religious people and I don't think its okay to not take it seriously and the he says 'well the parents said its okay if i'm not catholic they just want someone if something happens to them' but 1. their first child has the guys's brother so if something happened FH wouldn't take the child anyway and 2. if I wasn't chosen as a godmother for the same 'non religious' reasons I am not taking care of someone elses kid.

Is it me?!??!?!!?!?!??! or is FH and the friend correct????????

Im not really religious but I know that if I was chosen as a God Parent not only would I be honored but regardless of mythoughts and beliefs I would make sure that the child was still religious->does that make sense? That is just me, and really if anything happens to the parents you will not have to take care of their kid, no matter what. you are not signed into their will. Your only responsibility is to take care of that childs religious upbringing-that doesnt amke you executor of their child nor 'parent' if something happens to the parents. Those children would go to the grandparents or whoever is named in their will as being the custodial parent

peg, i agree that nowadays most ppl likely choose based on who they would entrust their children to given something happened to them. however simply bc ppl in society are making the decision based more on this, it still does not take anything away from the fact of what being a godparent is SUPPOSED to entail from the viewpoint of the church- involvement in the religious upbringing of the child. its something i personally take seriously and plan to do w/ my niece. thats just me and i realize all ppl are different. again, regardless of difference, there is a set of responsibilities that apply to all godparents whether or not they choose to uphold them.

my honest opinion... i think your FH could talk to them about his concerns if he has any. i would think that its impt that he or anyone takes it seriously for the child regardless of his personal belief.

this being said, if the parents aren't concerned at all about your FH not being religious, who am i or anyone else to tell them different. it doesn't make sense to me but its not my thing to 'get' or judge.

it also sounds like youre saying you think you weren't chosen bc you're not religious? they chose FH but you said he isn't either so maybe they just feel comfortable with another person? i know many parents who have chosen two ppl that weren't a couple, for whatever reasons. if you're not the godmother, you don't have those responsibilities, so you don't need to worry about 'caring for someone elses kid' as you said or their religious upbringing.

as for the guy having a brother and your FH becoming the godparent and who would take care of the child if anything God forbid happened, i can only suggest reading up on or asking the parish what being a godparent entails.

I've heard that you can. But I was also told that you couldn't be God parents if you weren't married in a church, which almost seems like it would be contradictory. Who knows.

Catholocism = That's why I'm converting to Episcopalian.

It's a shame that you find the Church frustrating... it sounds like you dont' understand some of the teachings. so many people don't understand why the Church preaches what they do and they leave... that's a shame. but if you're only leaving because it's frustrating, maybe there are somethings you don't know or understand.
but to answer your and the PP question:

you can ABSOLUTELY baptize your children if you were not married in a church. People often convert to the faith after being married, or maybe did not get married in the Church, but want their children to be rasied in the Church. Maybe the parents have no religion at all, but want to raise their child as a Catholic. The Church welcomes all babies regardless of the parents religion or lack thereof.

Godparents must have at least the Sacrament of baptism. the other Sacraments are not necessary to be a godparent, although being Confirmed would be the ideal as you are promising to help rear the child in the Church, so as someone that is confirmed, you are already a full member of the Church.

godparents dont' necessarily have to be married to each other (i.e. the godfather and godmother don't have to be a couple. they could be siblings, friends, or not even know each other!) so them being married to each other is irrevelant in this case.
