You are not married by an ordained minister?

I would think so, my SIL baptised her first son and she wasnt even married.

I've heard that you can. But I was also told that you couldn't be God parents if you weren't married in a church, which almost seems like it would be contradictory. Who knows.

Catholocism = That's why I'm converting to Episcopalian.

Yes. I know people who've baptized their children without being married at all.

yep. the problem comes up when the godparents aren't Catholic, married in the church, etc.

to respond to the few who have posted about god-parents needing to be married, baptized Catholic, etc...

my husband (when he was only my fiance) and i became god- parents to my niece in a Catholic church. DH is a Christian but isnt Catholic (I was at the time) but we both vowed to uphold our 'duties' with our god-daughter, and to be a good Christian influence in her life, which we always will! (I no longer attend the Catholic church, not for any bad reason, just found a different Christian church that suited us).

anyways, getting off topic, to answer the original post, i think so.

thats just crazy

really dont understand why the problems would start with the god parents..if the parents of the child arent married and thats ok

its not ok for the god parents to not be married or if they are it has to be in a church

if it was me i wouldnt want to baptize my child at all if they were going to have rules like that JMO

you know who is good as far as god parents god for your child and as long as thats clear..nobody should tell you who you can and can not have as god parents

again JMO

The child is an innocent, it can be baptized regardless of the sort of situation it was born in. However, godparents are supposed to be guardians of the child's religious upbringing hence why they are supposed to be faithful christians.

As long as one parent is a baptized Catholic some (but not all) parishes will allow it.

You do not have to be married to baptize your child catholic.

The godparents do not have to married or married in a catholic church.

Only ONE of the two godparents has to be Catholic

on this sort of same topic.....can a single person who is engaged but not getting married in a church ---b/c they aren't religious at all----be a 'godparent'??????
Also the other godparent chosen is someone else all together not related in any way to that person.

A godparent does not have to be related to you. They can be anyone that you want to have help you with the spiritual upbringing of your child. IMHO I wouldn't choose someone who isn't religous at all to be a godparent. The point of being one it to help with the spiritual life of the child. If they aren't religous maybe finding some other way to recognize them would be more appropriate, but again that is JMO.

Yes you can baptize your children, married not married, etc. as long as you vow to raise your children to follow the religion.

The God Parents do not have to be family-they can be ANYONE-one of them must be baptized into Catholicism-some parishes will allow one-others are stricter and they want both to be. The reason they want this is b/c the God Parents are responsible for the childs 'religious upbringing' tho over the years the parents are more the ones that do this.

My Aunt and Uncle went to Baptize their child at their new Parish and the Priest said no because the church does not recognize their marriage. I think all churches are different though
