Most white gold is made by adding nickel, palladium, and other white metals to regular gold.
There are different levels of white gold - less costly WG is made with a lot of nickel, and some people are allergic to the nickel. Higher priced/'whiter' WG will have more palladium added.
My e-ring is WG, with high levels of palladium, and low levels of nickel. If your ring/piece of jewelry is custom made, you may also be able to choose the alloy of the metal. I did!
(I only know this because I researched extensively when getting ready to look for an e-ring.)

welcome!
the pricescope.com forums are a great resource if you have further questions.
I don't know if you can neccessarily be 'allergic' but white gold can yellow faster on some people. I have a white gold pearl ring and it still looks silver, but many people will find after a couple of years that the jewelry will become yellowy and you may have to have it redipped.

Re: Can you be allergic
you definitely can be allergic - it's usually an allergy to nickel.
